What appears to be another easy read on first glance is throwing me off due the changing lines, particularly the 5th.

From Karcher:

Great Invigorating Strength
He loses the flock in Yi. We change with ease.
Without a cause for sorrow.

Not an appropriate situation

I've been debating taking the heavy handed step of cutting myself off entirely from someone who has been quite negative. 34 seemed like a slam dunk "yes," but the changing lines into 39 seem to imply instead creatively rethinking the sitaution, which from where I stand seems like a binary on or off. Curious how people here would read these lines.

With 4 changing lines ... it sound as if there's a lot of intervening (maybe unpredictable) factors, though the lines are generally fine, auspicious. It looks like the obstruction or impasse (39) is the context right now and you could go ahead with your plan (34). Just make sure that there's a real need to sever ties and act with propriety, rectitude. If inaction or innovation (39) would bring about the same results, then that's less work for you, less entanglements and repercussions for the ram. [edit+] Don't be like a ram that get's the horns all tangled in a fence if this cutting-off is not vital for wellbeing (only adding to drama).
Good luck.

What can I expect if I cut someone off? 34.1.2.4.5>39

Hex 34 emerges following a withdrawal (33) and although a Great Invigorating Strength is beginning to manifest the situation it can be a bit like like taking a ride on a powerful motorbike. One small twist on the throttle (an injection of too much power) in an inexperienced hand can bring about a wheelie and this takes you on a totally different ride than the one you were expecting.

You are walking in a time of hardship and limping (39) through it and so to make the most of 34 energies you must first still yourself. Become centred and balanced.

What can I expect if I cut someone off when I am still hurting and have not stilled myself?

34.1- At the basic level it just leads to failure.
34.2- Finding inner balance, though, leads to good fortune.
34.4 - Once balanced all things can become more easily untangled and progress can be made.
34.5 - If you are unable to find or maintain stillness it makes it really difficult to herd all the cats and you can easily fall back into your old ways. So find a way to lose the ram that keeps you butting into things. You know what will happen; you've experienced it all before and so cannot have any regrets if you allow the ram to rule the roost again.

...or it might mean nothing at all like this for you.

Good Luck

Thank you both. That adds some clarity to the reading, although it does reveal the situation to be more complex, as I feared.

Reading over it again this morning, I was struck by how different the fourth line feels from the fifth. Karcher again:

Great Invigorating Strength. Wise words! Trial: The Way is Open
The cause for sorrow disappears
The hedge is broken through, no more entanglement
Invigorate the axles of the great war chariots

This is going towards honor

Feels so unambiguous to me, but I've read the top line should always take prominence in a reading. Is that correct?

I wonder if overall it means that taking a stand like this has, or will, feel like a struggle to you, a difficult thing to do? Have you been trying to find some other way to deal with it, other than what you call this heavy-handed action? Trying to find some other way is 39. It's in the background, not your advice.

So if you haven't found anything better that works, the reading might mean cutting him off is what's left. You'd be doing what you have to do.

There are two lines where the ram goes too far, too fast and gets stuck in the hedge. You did not get either of them. I figure that means that's not what you'd be doing if you go through with this.

Yes, I've been trying to think of another way, and keep coming back to this action. I've been kind of limping along, debating for awhile what to do, and feeling worn down by that questioning.
