7. The Army - The team organizes around the core principles:
7.1 Eat regularly
7.2 Nobody else can eat for you
7.3 Don't eat dead things
7.4 Rest and relax after a meal
7.5 Find your own food
7.6 Ultimately you will recognize and be able to organize your world to provide you with nourishment on a continuing basis.

This last idea, that 7.6 is about finding/creating a world that will sustain us is what I think is the point of hex. 7. That is, while there's a lot of talk about armies and corpses, this isn't a hexagram about fighting. It's about how to survive. The image tells us that the superior man increases his masses not by slaughtering an enemy, but by his generosity toward the people. So ultimately the lesson here is on how to work together, how to create a team and establish a fief.

Hi rosada, I hope you are still around and may be can give me some hint on H7.
Recently a married friend told me he is in lov with me. Not being sure about my own feelings toward him, I ask IC "what do I feel?" and got H7, L5.
At 1st I thought the message was that I should "fight for him". But now, reading your "7.5 Find your own food", I'm thinking it means "find yourself someone who is free".
I appreciate if you'd be kind and give me your oppinion.

It's a treacherous situation, one of deception, and your reading reflects that. I think you're right to say 'find yourself someone who is free.'

My personal opinion is with Ginnie's answer.

However, I've given much thought to line 5, and am leaning away from Brad's answer to this, but I don't have the translation skills he does, so I could be mistaken. However, I'm reading it, and seeing it play out, that misfortune is not due to the inexperienced younger brother's initiative, and therefore he should not lead the army, but just the opposite. Leadership which is based solely on seniority and ignores the younger ones intuition and inclination to take aggressive action, can lead to defeat or surrender of the entire platoon. Experience and seniority does not automatically equal stronger, nor even more intelligent decisions, or sometimes pure guts.

Dear Viva,

If you read the part about 7.5 in the Memorizing thread you know there was a lot of discussion about keeping one's position secret. So the I Ching seems to be confirming your feeling that a romance between the two of you would have to be kept secret. As line 5 is also the position of the commander you may be feeling somehow intimidated by his declaration or swept off your feet or somehow feeling you should follow his "orders."
