the question . . .
What do i need to understand about my dream, being an eagle free, restricted then shown a way out?

yi response . . .
hexagram 48, the well

interesting sequence . . .
the well follows from hexagram 47, confined:
'confined in reaching upward naturally means turning inward, and so the well follows.'

for context . . .
this then is the whole story of the dream

i was a bird, a big bird with large wings, an eagle flying high in the sky and over the hills and valleys, over vast lush beautiful lands. it was wonderful soaring through the sky, my beak parting the wind; i could feel the wind curl the tips of my wings,
as i was flying, i suddenly became aware of high walls around me. even though i was in the sky, i could not fly over these walls. there were no gates or doors or windows to exit from or enter into. and now, the walls contained all this vastness : the hills, the valleys and sky. i continued flying around and somehow, realised that the enclosed area was a u-shaped structure and now i was no longer aware of what was outside the space i was in, except for the grey interior.
i flew around this u-shaped ‘structure’ and suddenly became aware of a man on the ground, way down below and i swooped in his direction. he opened a door and he went through it. in that instant, i awoke.

i had this dream in 2003

why now . . .
i ask now 'cause i've experienced, metaphorically speaking, a wake-life parallel

The way you describe it I'm not sure its an actual dream. At least it sounds like something we call in other ways, even though in most definition of a dream it will fit.

As far as I'm aware, there is space we dream in. Like a stream flowing through all the individual "bubbles" people play their dreams on. But there is a stream, the "great dream" of the native american tribes, or the "astral" of the hermetic schools or the "darkness visible" of the clairvision orders...
Going beyond the domain the bubble of an individual dream is contained in, can get you there. But that isn't a dream exactly, that is a chance for a dream to turn into sometimes different. Some call it "astral projection", out of body experience, light body travel(though that has other requirements as well) or whatever one choose to call that. Its something we put a lot of effort to do, sometimes.

Or at least it sounds like it, years ago I was usually flying through the sky, there is domain where the world there is played at, breaking through it can get you outside.

And why the Well... The stream is called "the Waters", so its a way of going beyond the dreams to the source of the places we dream in. There are worlds there. One can learn stuff. Seems reasonable to show as a Well, although to be fair can show up in many other ways as well.

thank you Gmulii words for thought!

another interesting response to the same post on another forum . . .
"I always would recommend to stay with what you know “intuitively” and explore that further.
In my experience it’s the quickest way home.
Everybody has to find their own way of connecting with the root chakra.
The man in your dream was standing on the ground, that’s where the door was that he went through."

another response from yet another forum . . .

"It seems like a very clear guidance dream to me, I see the eagle as your spirit, slowly becoming more and more limited by your physical body, but in the end shown the only way to regain freedom which is by finding the door below and entering through it yourself, ie., by your consciousness entering through the lower door.
The dream shows very clearly that there is no other window, gate or door, as seen from the perspective of your spirit itself, apart from the one below, so you are given a head start and don’t need to even try to find one where your spirit has shown that one doesn’t exist.
What’s left is what “on the ground” points to, in my experience the starting point is below the navel, equivalent to the lower dantian in Daoism."

And Ano, regarding the response in this forum, from the Yi, I am wanting to know, was the response 48 unchanging? You had no moving lines, is that right?

Seems reasonable to show as a Well

48 Jing • Replenishing
replenishing.
the site of a village may be moved,
not the well.
neither loses nor gains.
coming and going, drawing, drawing.
nearly out of the well,
break one’s bucket - misfortune.

~ Alfred Huang
. . . . .

48 Ching Well
a well. a city may be moved, but not a well. a well suffers from no decrease and no increase; but often when people come to draw water there, the rope is too short or the pitcher gets broken before reaching the water - misfortune

~ John Blofeld
. . . . .

48. ching / the well
the sequence . . .
he who is oppressed above is sure to turn downward. hence there follows the hexagram of the well.

~ Richard Wilhelm
. . . . .

48, the Well
there is always water in the well, but not everyone will reach it – and if you can’t reach the source, or lack the means to contain it, it will never help you.

so receiving hexagram 48 is often a sign that there is real work to be done. its roots lie in the desperate isolation of hexagram 47, confined. one who experiences confinement is like a tree hemmed in on all sides by walls, unable to trust the words that connect them to others or make sense of the world. and so she (or he) is cast back on her own inner resources – where yi hints that she will find some transformative ‘mutual encounter’ at the heart of the experience.

What's missing here is your own thoughts, unless I missed them. Lots of quotes but you haven't said the most important thing which is what you think.

the question . . . What do i need to understand about my dream? ... Yi response . . . hexagram 48, the well

why (ask) now . . . 'cause i've experienced, metaphorically speaking, a wake-life parallel

Hex. 48's lower trigram (three line figure) is Wind. In your dream you are exploring like the wind - and carried by the wind - or perhaps like a small wooden boat being carried along by a river.

But suddenly you are faced with high walls, no exits, being enclosed and you are no longer aware ..... And this felt like ... ? Perhaps being caught up in an abyss of fear or sadness - or unfinished grief (perhaps) - and this is now the wind-river you're caught in. You are then shown a door, a way to get out of your out-of-control - or controlling - river of wind.

Now, 18 or so years later ... the city (you) has moved, but the Well (gentle wind/wood and moving water) are still the same. As you quoted someone above, "there is (still) real work to be done". And since you did not complete your journey last time, the Yi asks: is your rope still too short to draw from the well, is your dipping jar still damaged? And do you still need to repair these?

Those are the questions you want to ask yourself before embarking on your (next) 'waking-life parallel' journey.

yi response . . . hexagram 48, the well

I see another life-parallel here:

No matter where we move our cities, even if we move to the Southern Hemisphere or move to the north, or go back and forth; or we turn our maps or compass points upside-down, or re-arrange trigram (bagua) circles ....

The well is still the well. And wind, and wood, and water still remain wind, and wood, and water.

very interesting take dfreed
opens other avenues of thought

by the way, the waking-life parallel has already occured - way outside my control - and all is well

thank you Trojina for the wake-up call

I am new to the yi - about three months old and a couple of weeks here

the quotes are my research to see what yi translators and miscellaneous opinion-makers had to say and decided to share the variety of ways in seeing the same thing

so Trojina, this is what i think . . .

i’ve drunk from the well. i’ve been to the well with a short rope, i’ve broken many jars at the well. but now, after eighteen years, I’m at the end of that cycle. a new cycle has begun. the yi told me to go through the open door - to follow through - and i did

today was one of the best days of my life - synchronicity aside - what would have led to a major disaster - with domino effect (many jars would've broken) - turned into the most positive thing (many buckets of clean water) and all went well
