Hex 18 has been coming up a lot for me lately. In fact, just when I see a good answer, it changes to 18: Corruption. This hex seems to indicate some source of misfortune that I somehow bring upon myself. What is more, it mentions ancestors and honoring them, sayng that one's failure to do so may bring progress to a halt.

I am naturally quite prone to depression and sometimes get so down / wrapped up in my own misery that I tend to be my one worst enemy. My mother, i.e. my closest ancestor is the same.

Could this be a warning? Be more positive and practice positivity or let your life remain sad forever?

Well I'm not very good with interpretations, but here are some explanations of 18:

Accept the process of natural decay.
Source: Daniels

Indicates great progress and success (to him who deals properly with the condition represented by it). There will be advantage in (efforts like that of) crossing the great stream. (He should weigh well, however, the events of) three days before the turning point, and those (to be done) three days after it.
Source: Legge

The Judgment:
Work on what is spoiled has supreme success. It is advantageous to cross the great water. Before the starting point three days, after the starting point three days.

The Image:
Below in the mountain the wind blows. The image of decay. Thus the noble rouses the people and strengthens their spirit.

Service. Thou mayst cross the stream no doubt,
if thou have fully thought thy purpose out.

Hexagram 18 Ku - Disruption/Work on Corruption

Mountain over Wind

There is disorder. There is an opportunity to fix the situation by righting wrong ideas and attitudes. You need strength of character and decisive action, but first figure out where the source of disorder is. When you've identified it, work quickly.

When things are not renewed by living movement, deterioration or decay may result. Understanding the causes of such deterioration can lead to its removal. What was decaying can then be salvaged, leading to growth. The decaying can become manure for what springs from it.

The turning point brings opportunity to make changes, to bring in the new, as you move with the tide of things. It is right. With the changes taking place one can sweep away what was amiss with the past. Let it go.

The way of life laid down by your family may no longer be valid. Take up the challenge of being responsible for your own actions as the old order decays.

When the old has finally decayed there will be a period of waiting, as when the sun reaches the shortest day in mid-winter, days elapse before the delivery to longer days assures itself.

Now strength can be used to reshape things that would have been difficult while the old order held sway. But first take stock and clear away the debris of the old. As this is done care must be taken to clearly understand the cause of the present decline. Then when this understanding is employed in action, carefully check the results as they arise.

It is a good season to face difficulties, take journeys or move into new projects. Good fortune attends this.

Key words: Salvaging from the old and crumbling what still has life for the present.
