Hello,

I have recently been dealing with some issues related to gastrointestinal health. The extent of these issues I am uncertain, however I have my concerns that it could be something serious.

I asked if there was "Blood in my stool/Is it serious if it is" and I received hexagram 37 with no moving lines. Therefore I asked "What does this mean", and I then got hexagram 30 with moving lines 2, 3, 4 then changing to 41.

There's so much ambiguity and there may not be anything truly wrong. But any insight would be very much appreciated. I'm very young therefore I hope I am healthy.

Quite possibly, this common condition runs in your family. Or the I Ching might be pointing out that some dynamic in your family is responsible for the occurrence; that is, that emotions have here influenced your bodily functions.

mholden1969;157749 Therefore I asked "What does this mean" said:
Well, it's a condition caused by heat or inflammation. Also, the emotions might be very involved. It's something that happens suddenly ... and then it's over. Hexagram 30 is the hexagram of being dependent upon other people. Maybe you are angry or frustrated at being dependent on family members?

To me that sounds like something you need not worry about, because, really, this happens to just about everybody at one time or another. But if it persists or gets worse, you should, of course, consult a doctor. It is really a mistake to use the I Ching as a substitute for going to see your doctor. Even experienced diviners run into many problems using the I Ching for medical questions. As you can see from just this one brief example, the oracle is looking deeper than the physical level.

Many thanks.

I tend to feel 37 indicates that all is in its proper place doing its proper job. Order. hence I feel 37 often indicates all is okay. I would not dream however of encouraging you to think that is the answer and all is okay !

Yes of course you must ask a dr. I would not use the I Ching to diagnose myself if I had blood in my stools and I've been casting Yi for years. Could be something as harmless as piles ? Then again may not be. I know its definately not something to ignore over any period of time. Theres even an ad campaign here in UK for people not to ignore such signs as these.

As you are young and this is quite a common phenomenon I think , theres no need to be alarmed but yes don't delay in getting it checked out

Is blood in my stool serious?
37 unchanging

All is not well in your house but not necessarily serious. Note Kan (blood) in the lower inner trigram. If the blood is red, does not occur daily, and is not accompanied by pain, then a stool softener and avoiding hard foods -- toasted almonds in particular -- may clear up the problem without seeing a doctor. That is, if the problem is caused by constipation or hard food. If the blood looks like coffee grounds or if there is continual intestinal pain, see a doctor.

Wind comes forth from fire:
The image of the Family.
Thus the superior man has substance in his words
And duration in his way of life.

Do you have flatulance?

In Chinese tradition, health advice is attached to each hexagram. It's something to consider, but usually not important. For 37

X I Ching: HEALTH: Beware of enervation and impotence.
Master Ni: DISEASE: It will be difficult to cure.

I actually do have flatulence as a matter of fact. I am not even sure if there is blood but I'm more concerned about it being internal bleeding. However I may not be bleeding at all. I do have anxiety issues which I wonder may be altering things in my body. What do you mean by Kan in the inner trigram? I am not quite familiar with that. I am seeing a doctor regardless so do not worry about that. And as for the health, when you say enervation what do you mean exactly? And does "Difficult to cure" usually point towards something terrible, such as cancer?

Thank you for your input.

Lines 2, 3, and 4 form the trigram Kan, which stands for pig and blood and other things. The name of hexagram 37 is 家人, the first character being a pig under a roof, representing the home of a family.

The Chinese sources I quoted said that, not me. If you do not have intestinal pain or blood and are a young person, you are most unlikely to have gastrointestinal cancer. Enervation in traditional Chinese medicine means a loss of qi (vitality), which worrying about your health in the absence of clear symptoms will do to you. If flatulance is your main problem, then you should avoid those foods that promote it -- beans of all sorts (but not cut green beans), sweetpotato, cabbage, collards, Jerusalem Artichoke, etc. I am on statins and one of their side effects is flatulance. By homeopathic logic I found that a small dose of castor oil ( 1/4 to 1/3 teaspoon) twice a day greatly reduces the problem.

Could that trigram be formed then if there is a loss of vitality from something such as heavy anxiety? After all, if it symbolizes water which is nourishment then would that be a possibility?

And thank you for mentioning about the castor oil, I will try that.

Yes, Kan could symbolize heavy anxiety. Usually, water in its nourishing aspects is symbolized by Dui (Lake or Marsh).

Yes, the trigram Kan symbolizes rather water in its more dangerous aspects, such as water rushing through a ravine or ditch.
