I am considering purchasing a property in a particular town as a long-term investment, to rent out. The town has fallen on hard times and the properties as such are very cheap, but I have reason to suspect that over the coming decades the situation in the town may well improve. I am not looking at any individual house at present, but simply investigating the idea of the town as a whole. It has some of the highest rental yields in the nation. I would not directly deal with tenants but would rent out through an intermediary agent. One problem could be bad tenants that destroy the property etc or don't pay rent while refusing to leave - problem tenants etc. This kind of property investment in an area that is not salubrious could lead to such headaches and would be reason to exercise caution. I asked the I Ching and it gave me 48 unchanging.

This is the image of the well, which on the surface might seem positive - 'an inexhaustible dispensing of nourishment' - perhaps giving the idea of continual income of steady cash.

Interestingly, the judgement says "the town may be be changed, but the well cannot be changed" - I was thinking about the town being altered in the future, and it's as though the I Ching is saying my investment will still be the same, no better, no worse - which could be a warning against my greed - or it could be a positive sign saying that no matter what changes come about the society, this investment will be enduring.

There are points of caution though in the judgement - about the rope not going down far enough (not going down to the foundations of life, writes Wilhelm) - even worse, carelessness, writes Wilhelm, leads to the jug getting broken, and all the investment being broken - no more cash to pull up from the well. I have never been to this town before, and it's not in my region of the country, and so there is perhaps scope here for carelessness.

Also I wonder if the image with its talk of the superior man who "encourages the people at their work" is a subtle caution not to engage in this type of investment - as I would not be encouraging the people at their work, but would simply extracting money.

I am interested to hear what people think about this.

Hello;

48 shows the property will be a steady source of income for you. I see no specific warning here. Yes, you would face problems if the jug is broken; as in any other situation.

Good luck
