Hello :)
I have been curious if this for awhile as I study astrology; and thought maybe asking yi would show me.

When I see "travelling" I think of Gemini or sag (although Sagittarius doesn't not fit his personality that I can see ) The change to the vessel (transformation) suggests Scorpio

Anyone have any ideas?

I could guess he is an Aquarius...
because of sense of detachment that 56 gives in general

plus Aquarius is pictured with a vessel in his hand :)

I'm a newbie to I Ching but considerably more experienced with astrology. To me this suggests Sagittarius, like you said, or maybe Aquarius.

I see leadership qualities here, someone who ventures out but gains followers. So those two resonate. I'd also think Aries, perhaps, because of its cardinal nature.

Thank you for the ideas everyone :)

I would like to ask him his sign, eventually I will but I thought it'd be fun to try asking yi at this time..

His personality shows strong earth, some water and a bit of air. He shows no fire at all.
From what I see of him, I guess Virgo, Gemini, Scorpio, Taurus or cancer. It's hard to say because he may be a cancer sun with many other planets in Gemini or something. I can't wait to find out a date so I can see what influences are there :) (I love guessing people's signs)
All I know is his birth year was 1992

Well, I just wanted to share that I asked him and he is a Taurus. I would have not guessed that from this hexagram :p

This page shows how the hexagram chart (post#8) can be related to the Western Zodiac and the Almanac pages combine the Western and Chinese calendars.
http://www.weather.gov.hk/gts/time/24solarterms.htm
You can get an exact correspondence if you count 40.1 as the Vernal Equinox and the first point of astrological Aries, and each hexagram line would correspond to 1 degree of the sun's longitude along the zodiac.
I've had a few hits using this system, but not on demand. It just seems to happen spontaneously.
Anyway its a system to experiment with and with traditional roots.

In retrospect the references toward property and modesty do seem very Taurean themes.

When I read your post, the first thing that came to mind about 50 was food = Taurus.
But, what you said about 50/tranformation/Scorpio sounded more plausible.
I was totally divided on it so I didn't comment at all. Thanks for updating!

About the changing line - maybe your friend has strong characteristics of Sagittarius and/or Gemini (eg houses, or aspects, or stellium etc) - so strong that someone might mistake them for those signs?

Good question.

56.2 > 50 = Taurus is illuminating for both 56.2 and the astrological sign.
I mean, I think of 56 as being all about traveling, naturally, but if 56.2 is seen as relating to Taurus, the most fixed of all the Earth signs, that makes me muse about how one who is complete within themselves, as Taurus is known to be, can travel anywhere without being corrupted and is able to manifest what they need where ever they are.
And of course 50,The Ting is the most prize possession and one that can allow you to pack and carry all your possessions, and Taurus rules possessions.

Anyway, Makes me think 56.2 is a good example of how to be grounded where ever you are.

I've consulted the I Ching about astrological interpretations and gotten meaningful answers too. I particularly find it helpful when after setting up a chart to ask the IC to sum it all up for me.

56.2 : '' Sojurning approaching a resting place. Cherishing ones own. Acquiring a youthful vassal:Trial.'' (Karcher&Ritsema)

The first thing that came to mind with 56 was the 28 lunar lodges of Chinese astrology.

So the traveller finds a lodge and also a youthful servant.

The young servant suggests Gemini, famous for perpetual youthful appearance regardless of chronological age. Thats my sign. He's not the main player in the line but he's close by.

The traveller's cherished possessions are safely tucked away.Thats seems very Taurean.

The Ding with its feet on the ground was a prized possession and symbolised stability and foundation.
Earthy Taurus who values possessions is a good match.

Its easier when you know the answer beforehand.

A peculiarity of 56.2 - 50 is that the 12 lines positions resonate with the 12 signs and houses of the Zodiac viewed in circular arrangement.

The second line position corresponds to 2nd sign Taurus and the 2nd house of possessions.

The opposite '8th' line position 50.2 , fan yao if you like, corresponds to the opposite 8th sign Scorpio and the 8th house of Transformation.
Scorpio as Metamorphosis : https://zodiacrealm7.wordpress.com/category/scorpio/all-about-scorpio/

And the essence of Ding is transformation. eg see Hilary's translation here
http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/frie...world-or-maybe-I-dont-understand-this-reading
When the Ding was used in sacrificial context the aromatic food essences were thought to entice the ancestral spirits (who reciprocated with the blessings of prosperity and many decendants). That has a Taurean quality to it too. For eg See Flaunt your Sign > How to seduce a Taurus.

When I was still wondering what his sun sign was, I awoke during the night and looked out at the stars which had been in hiding for a good while.
Centre stage was Orion, mighty hunter, lover of Artemis, goddess of the hunt,
Facing him was Taurus, the charging bull, with distinctive red eye Aldebaran.
A shooting star flashed inside Orion in the direction of Taurus.
