Hello everyone! Long time reader, first time poster :)Nice to meet you all.I've recently gone through a huge life change. I moved overseas with a lover last autumn, very soon it was clear things weren't working out between us and although we split, I continued to live overseas and have spent the last 6 months doing a lot of inner work and deep personal transformation. I've decided that I will return home to Canada in the late summer and go back to school (second career, and was a hard choice to make to return to school at this point in life) the following January. Before I leave, I've decided to take a trip through Europe, however part of me just feels like what's the point of going on an adventure right now? I'm worried about the expense of the trip and to be honest, I've done quite a bit of travelling the last few years and have satisfied quite a lot of wanderlust. I feel like I'm just ready to get on with life and get back home and organize things for school. But at the same time, I feel really called to explore. I also seem to be having a lot of difficulty organizing the details of the trip, and it's become a chore. So I asked the I Ching, if I already know the direction I want to go in in life (returning home and returning to school) what is the point of even taking this trip? I feel like I should just be getting on with life already!I got 42.1.4 > 12I see that 42 is saying that I've been blessed and to ride the wave I'm on (exploration!) and it's talking about taking advantage of the opportunity that's all around me and I agree...but not sure line 4 is saying or hex. 12? Any insights?

Hi cosmic_yes,

So I asked the I Ching, if I already know the direction I want to go in in life (returning home and returning to school) what is the point of even taking this trip?

Your question sounds very confusing, hence the answer is also confusing.
So you already know the direction you want (home/school).
And you're asking: if I do know what I want (home/school), why take a trip?

That sounds like you actually prefer to go on a trip.
And yet you've already said you know which direction you want.

I find this phrasing totally confusing, hence I can't make any sense of your answer, sorry.
Maybe re-think the question and re-cast?

I see hexagram 12 as describing your current state of mind - you're at a Standstill where you are and not inspired to do any more travel, you just want to go home. Line 42.1 does suggest there are opportunities out there however and 42.4 suggests to me that maybe it's just your current location that is so uninspiring. I wonder if once you actually started moving or at least got out of the town you're in now you might be glad you did?

Further thoughts -
Hexagram 12. Standstill points out that when things are at a standstill they don't just change by themselves. (read the lines, they describe a situation going from blah to beautiful because of the person's own attitude to get things moving again). So perhaps the I Ching is saying to you, "Well you have an opportunity to travel (42.1.4) but if you don't want to do it, if you don't put some energy and enthusiasm into it, nothing much will come of it."

You might get benefit from asking, "what would be the experience if i go back to the states now [not travel]?"

Thank you so much Rosada. Your interpretation was super helpful and I feel spot on. Definitely feel like I'm in a state of stagnation. And what you said in the previous comment about my current location not being very inspiring rings true. I asked what the experience would be if I simply went home and got 63.2.4 > 43Interesting because when I read about 63, it deals with themes of completion and endings....or not. The lines seem to speak of losing dignity and not trying too hard to get it back and little problems arising, and the need for determination. I've decided anyway to take the trip, realizing I can always end it early if I'm not feeling it. But after considering it, definitely feel like I need to break away from where I currently am and get a fresh perspective. Thanks so much for your insights.
