what kind of job is right for me? 3 uc

i’d be curious to know how you interpret this. as few different readings led up to this question, i guess it’s too long of a story to provide the full background. plus, would be interested to see how my initial understanding aligns with your answers, so i’m happy to share more thoughts as i hopefully gather some feedback.

in a very broad sense, it helped me realise that my current line of work has maybe actually more purpose for me to see than i initially recognised. looking back at my career, weirdly, i always seem to find myself in the midst of chaos, but mostly viewed it as cause for burnout rather than place of growth… but 3 also makes me wonder about those slowly germinating ideas of personal projects, that i’ve been setting aside for years.
yet another fun fact, i’ve been stuck for a about a decade in a corporate job and i’m open to the thought of a complete career switch. could the pledge after 10 years from line 2 in Wilhelm’s translation be about making a firm decision in the direction i take?
and what do you think in this context of Wilhelm’s commentary to the 1st governing line that „to rule by serving is the secret of success” ?

what types of professions, what fields of occupation are coming to your mind for hexagram 3? i can’t help but love studying so would consider taking up some steps to further my education if it’s to support the goal of making my work situation better. but at this stage in my life and with little financial resources i’d have to pick my next studies much more carefully… not sure if it’s to do with 3 at all though.

from Bradford: Collect the wits first and start turning things to advantage.

dear onlineclarity, can you please share your wisdom? i’m grateful for all your help.

There aren't types of professions for hexagrams, that would be kind of crass wouldn't it. I don't get why people would imagine hexagrams describe professions. What I mean is most of the time Yi is addressing you not describing things outside of you. Crass in the sense that would kind of be dumbing down to reduce it to a profession when it's actually talking directly to you.

Hexagram 3 is advice to you on finding the right profession for you, it's not describing the profession. So you need to do all the hexagram 3 types things, look, find helpers which are anything to help you explore. You are, according to this answer, nowhere near settling on anything just yet so it wouldn't be wise to try to finalise choices or anything like that but time to explore.

Yi is a book of change not one of staying the same and the notion of natal hexagrams is a misguided one.

thank you, rosada. funny, that's what i see as well and literally every idea i ever had about what to do for a living could somehow fit Wilhelm's image. that would include a writer or an artist, a teacher, a therapist, an analyst, having own business or a website, the list could go on. my personal research has a lot to do with "integration", again, bringing order out of chaos? and on every job interview when asked where i see myself in the future, i'd say project management. but for some reason that hasn't happened.

btw, there were times in my life when i actually thought maybe it's me who causes all the chaos in my direct environment, but this reading is making me see that possibly i'm in the chaos for a reason and that is to bring some order and help others? i'm weirdly comfortable with chaos tbh.

thanks radio, that's an interesting book. i had a look at the preview and seems like to get more info i'd need to build a completely new hexagram. will look into it more and see if it's worth buying. could you also share your interpretation for hex 3 in the context of this particular reading though?

There aren't types of professions for hexagrams, that would be kind of crass wouldn't it.

of course there aren't, but there's plenty of specific images within each hexagram, and in the search for right kind of profession it feels only natural to draw from them to get some answers? people do so many things for a living, some of them i have no clue about or would never imagine without hearing stories from other people (something called knowledge management for example). so my aim was to encourage everyone to share their connotations, as i'm simply looking for inspiration. maybe by chance i'd learn of something that actually fits?

Hexagram 3 is advice to you on finding the right profession for you, it's not describing the profession. So you need to do all the hexagram 3 types things, look, find helpers which are anything to help you explore. You are, according to this answer, nowhere near settling on anything just yet so it wouldn't be wise to try to finalise choices or anything like that but time to explore.

i get that the hexagram is "difficulties at the beginning" but at the same time the question is quite definite, it's about the kind of job that is right for me and not about the stage that i'm at in my search for the right job. surely, as it is with Yi, it might synchronistically point to where i'm currently at with finding my answer (and so i'm here - finding helpers :p). but i'd think the whole hex is also a pretty direct way of actually describing "the kind of job" that i'm meant to be doing. and since this would answer my original question, this is also something i'd like to explore more, through others' interpretation.

and another thing is, i know that i'm still exploring. i know i don't have the right answer yet and need to gain more experience still. i had other questions that resulted in handful of advice from Yi. but that is why i eventually asked "what kind of job" - pretty much asked Yi to describe the profession i'm after, so i don't understand why you say Yi can't provide the answer? also, maybe other people's ideas might not all be fitting, but who knows, maybe through some of them i can arrive at what i look for?

regarding finalising choices, i simply cannot afford to finalise them now, that's another known to me difficulty of the whole situation. but as said, if i'm to eventually consider a career-switch, i don't have that much time left to idle or means to "explore" more... that's why i'm asking for help.

as a side note / update, just after i posted this thread i got invited for an interview next week. while i'm still waiting for more details, i asked Yi how to proceed with it and got 7.2 > 2. this feels quite auspicious... almost as if i could use some quotes from Bradford's commentary to line 2 in the interview itself - to get and then, as suggested by resulting hexagram, accept the offer? so much for not putting my hopes up too high :brickwall:

Career compatibility is something you could get from a BaZi (four pillars) reading?

So, as an expedient, we could look at Hexagram 3's component trigram elements ~ water over wood ~ and see what comes up there?

Water ~ Transportation, courier, tourism, aquaculture, supplying and processing water, strategic planning and analytical fields, cleaning industry, fishermen, sailor, marine biologist, bartender, barista, hair dresser, marketing professional, tour guide, diver, swimming instructor, etc.

Basically jobs that are are flexible, adaptable, and creative.

Wood ~ Teaching, farming, furniture, wood-products, fashion-design, clothing, jobs that require inventing or designing, engineer, handyman, construction work, woodworker, personal trainer, gym instructor, driver, military personnel, etc.

Jobs that involve physical strength or endurance.

Are you feeling any resonance with this approach?

If I had to pick a Hex 3 job for you, it would involve: Creative Writing

***

"How to proceed with the interview/possible job offer?"
7.2 to 2 ~ The offer of your services is well-received. Auspicious!

From Joey Yap's 'Plum Blossom Divination' for 7.2:

Yao Text: One who serves in the Army will enjoy good fortune and be blameless in deed. The monarch may decorate one threefold.

The leader of the army has heavy demands thrust upon him, and to be equal to the responsibilities, he must be in touch with his troops and share the good and the bad with them. The ruler recognizes this, and adorns him not out of personal preference, but to honour the entire army that the leader represents. One who has the welfare of all nations and people at heart will receive grace from the heavens.

All Best!

Further thoughts...
I woke up this morning with the insight that 7.2-2 could be a head’s up to not underestimate the importance of the first impression - both the impression you make on them and the impressions you get about them. I wonder if 2. The Receptive as the resulting hexagram means that we cannot know what will happen next, whether you will go further in this direction or continue to look for opportunities? A seed has been planted at place and time. You be there too. Pay attention to all that is going on. This experience may serve your larger goal too, btw. Maybe what you are going through now - getting impressions, making choices - is all part of the 3. Difficulty at The Beginning experience and as you consciously observe the path you’re on yourself right now you’ll be able to teach what you’ve learned or some how use the experience to the benefit of others. Take Notes!

thank you radiofreewill, lots of useful info!

yes, that was my first pick as well. that is when i just learned how to write :D
maybe eventually i will get to fulfill this dream?

going back to BaZi, i'm far from fluent but the elements approach definitely resonates! your take on water has a lot with what i do, can or could do, while wood gives a setting or illustrates the related industry. i currently work with „data flow”, processing, planning, analytics, supply chain - transportation? some marketing, some finance and cleaning up - computer systems mostly, but still ;) and it’s to do with production, design, fashion in the area of systems architecture or engineering and then providing instruction… and the mention of strength and endurance makes me think again of bringing order out of chaos, so it all makes a nice circle.

and another underlying interpretation for the whole reading is the deeper reason why i feel completely demotivated with my current job. that is - knowing there’s no actual need for what my employer produces, and also no real concern for the environment and people, which keeps me constantly wondering, why then should i care about supporting them? the brand that i’m meeting next week has a sustainable business model (they’re more for quality over quantity and very much about endurance, somewhat in the field of tourism).

and just before i got to your interpretation i was reading a random article about them and along the lines there was this picture. felt quite reassuring when followed by your post…

burr100517_314-1-LR.jpg

i think the idea of sustainability fits both readings, for 3, in the global sense, we’re only at a difficult beginning in „cleaning up the planet after ourselves" and finding new solutions to the chaos of problems we created, and in 7.2, with the mention of shortening the lines of supply and command (as in companies that care about how and where their products and materials are sourced or manufactured)… i had an experience of working before for a brand with a similar focus and it was one of the best times i ever had.

thank you rosada for bringing me back down to earth! ("the receptive" pun intended)
speaking of first impressions, it's difficult not to underestimate your initial response though :D

but i totally agree, as i shared the exciting news with a couple of people today the feeling of need for more caution came over me and your interpretation pretty much sums it up. i definitely read it as advice to be receptive, responsive but considerate all along the way and it's definitely going hand in hand with much broader context of 3 here. and i guess somewhere in the back of my mind i still give myself about 3 years until i'm certain of my direction, but reading about how others view 3 definitely helps recognising that i might actually be on the right path or at least not as far from it as i might have initially imagined.

thanks for all your wonderful insight!

so the first impressions were quite positive, i believe on both sides. the interview went generally well, there was a good flow and we quickly built rapport, felt like both sides were equally receptive and received some confident feedback as well, while also got told that a couple more talks might follow. this depends on company's budget though, so now waiting for reply after giving my salary indication...

in the meantime i had a chance to see Hilary's workshop on Yi's imagery. it really helped (thank you), as it used 3 as an example, so i could easily refer to this reading and explore it further as i watched along. during the "visualise and imagine" bit, when it felt like i already exhausted my imagination by trigrams relations or other possible interpretations and was left with a completely empty mind, all of a sudden an image of "soaking beans" popped into my head (interestingly, aside from lentils i generally avoid cooking beans, as in most cases they require soaking overnight - but i do love beans)...
so using some of the techniques from the workshop, this is what i got (these are more "notes to self" that nonetheless i thought could be useful to some?):

what is the job of soaking beans
- you take beans, use a vessel and soak them in water.
why? rinse and cook to make them edible (add spices for flavour) - soaking helps to digest beans
- alternatively, after soaking beans you remove them from water.
why? place them in soil, continue to water and watch them grow

what is the purpose of the job
- sprouting, softening the bean for cooking or preparing it for the fertile soil, taking out bad seeds, cleaning, cleansing from pest and toxins, making them more digestible

what does it feel like to be a soaking bean?
- first taken from the source by an unknown force, stripped and sifted along with brothers and sisters, i now suddenly found a moment of peace in this chaos. water feels nice, like home, and it makes us all dance when stirred up. i feel like i don’t need to know my purpose, i can just be and through that i’ll eventually open up (to) more.

feudal lords - the process of the mind when for example cooking / gardening - having the whole strategy in mind being able to divide it in tasks and possibly delegate them, as well as plan ahead ( as in case of soaking beans).

what kind of job is soaking beans
- it requires action on my side, as well as planning, thinking ahead and some hands on-work that’s in a flow.

what does it feel to be doing this job?
- getting to it is somehow always a struggle but once i’m at it i actually enjoy it. when i set them aside for soaking i feel like i accomplished a step in something bigger and start looking forward to the results.

how does the job benefit others?
- its results can be shared with others, it can bring nourishment or ensure investment into the future (when planting the seeds instead of eating them)

*soaking beans to feed my mouth - continue looking for a job within my current profession, but one that will not only help me pay the bills but also benefit others more in the future;
*soaking beans for growth - continue planning my personal project, let the ideas germinate and start spilling the beans when the time is ripe. or right.

soaking overnight is most effective (it's good for me to "sleep on" a decision, give things time instead of immediately jumping after them - this might cause indigestion or for the bean not to sprout).

the biggest takeaway for me was starting to see myself more as an active than a passive force in different roles throughout my career (i dealt with a lot of bad or insecure managers who would often undermine my efforts, despite overall positive results i'd bring about, aside from a couple of good ones who i'm still really grateful i had a chance to work with). the ideas of recognising some potential (of situation, person, application etc.) and making things available for others are becoming prevalent in my readings and i feel they're worth keeping in mind, especially now that i gained some new perspective.

thank you all for all your help, might update much later still about how the job hunt unfolds.

What kind of job is right for me? 3uc

I'd say a job that allows you to germinate, to discover your hidden potentials. It seems to be a profession you should start from zero, of course with it's initial challenges. I can't explain why it makes me think of self-employment/entrepreneurship rather than working for someone else.

thanks again for all the insights. so the good news regarding the latter 7.2 > 2 - i was invited for 3 interviews to meet the team (triple decoration while meeting the army?) and eventually got the offer, signed the contract last week and will start next month, yay :)

and as to the original hexagram 3, once more, thank you @hilary for the opportunity to view the imagery workshop which brought about the idea of soaking beans for me. in my language "taking the initial trouble" basically translates to making initial effort and the last couple of months i finally took the steps to, quite literally, move on with my life. i found a place to rent and got the keys, i got a new job, and in the chaos of changes i also made a decision on what and when and why i want to and pretty sure i will study on the side. this could potentially lead to some form of self employment at a later stage in my life, but for now things are finally looking up and starting to make sense. i can feel the seeds of ideas i kept buried somewhere in my mind-heart are slowly sprouting.

thanks, mary! my general feeling is similar and the new employer works within more entrepreneurial mindset, while, although i'm quite experienced and happy with the offer, there are aspects of my role where i will have to learn a lot of basics again (which i'm actually excited about).
as to the studies - this is something i kinda gotta completely pick up from scratch, as i'm at the stage of realising how much i don't know yet on the topic. i have an idea for a book but i think writing a diploma on the subject first and meeting people in the field can help me actually make it happen one day (somewhere in my head i planned to take it easy and work on it for the next 10 years maybe, which only now i see might have subconsciously come from the reading ;)).

this one hexagram has brought up so many "aha" moments for me, probably too much even to list here (well, after all i'm still dealing with the chaos ;)) and a lot of it was thanks to this forum, so thank you all for sharing the interpretations. 💜

update. the job i got around the time of the reading was nice, but it wasn't it. also the field of study i considered and even signed up for isn't fully in line with what i feel is truer answer to the question of this thread. as i'm now in a sort of a personal "reset" year what started to really haunt me is the idea of teaching. english teacher was the very first direction i took right after high schol, but as i dropped out of college and then life got in the way it never happened. i'm planning to take a teaching course next year (and with my level of english my target group would most likely have to be beginners), in the meantime also taking life coach course (it was on a huge discount, don't judge me ;)). other things that i'm really drawn to is possibly teaching yoga (though absolutely no experience in this field, at least yet), feng shui consulting (or maybe I Ching for others one day, who knows) and art therapy.

somehow education feels right, in most of my jobs out of the whole team my bosses would pick me to deliver any training or do presentations. it's also funny, now that i look at my cv it seems all i've ever done was develop processes, change procedures, work on projects and then handover the job to someone else (other departments, etc). i might still need to fall back on my old career path, as i'm planning to move to my country and will have to start again somewhere, but i definitely don't see myself in a corporate environment for more than another 6 years max, after which i hope to fully switch to working for myself / freelancing, preferably in one (or more) of the fields i mentioned. i've been thinking of all this before i remembered this thread, and then all of a sudden it dawned on me, how much 3 it actually is. :)

03 brings to mind gardening, or nursery school, or even midwife and nursing (!).
Teaching English to beginners fits in too, as do freelancing and organising things also.

Hello :)
3UC is an advice to be persistent and to go through with your training. The beginnings need structure and perseverance, listen to your heart and your passion. You can do yoga at the same time 🧘‍♂️ Don't stop, do it:)
