Hi,

I've been working on a big project folio piece, which involves the adaption of a classic book, creating original words, illustrations, and layout, getting it bound etc etc

I've adapted the book "Wuthering Heights"... I've got everything almost ready to go but I've not been able to come up with a title that I thought fit the new, modern-day adaption.

I asked the I ching, "what should I call the book" and got hexagram 2.

Perhaps this is not the ideal kind of question to ask the I Ching, but I've only come up with nonsense so far.

In Wuthering Heights (not my version) Catherine actually says: "My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath--a source of little visible delight, but necessary."

Perhaps I should just call it Earth?

Any suggestions?

Hi DeepStillWater,

Just a thought, but rather than giving you the title of the book perhaps the oracle is asking you to be receptive to what comes from the imagination and the unconscious. In other words, sleep on it and try not to force it and then an answer will come. Having said that though, the oracle has I think settled on the most appropriate subject matter for your book title: the earth. With Wuthering Heights I think a descriptive title that suggests something earthy and elemental combined with a quality of love and devotion is the right way to go.

Hope this helps. Best wishes, Parzifal

Thanks Parzifal - I found your suggestion of a title that suggests something earthy and elemental combined with devotion really helpful.

Some inital thoughts: Constant Earth, The Shaded Earth, The Dark Earth...

I've worked so hard on this I hardly know if I can sleep on it much more, but I'll just let that swill around a little bit longer.

If you have read Wuthering Heights you might find it interesting to know that the I Ching summed up the relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine as 17.2> 58. Catherine choose Edgar (the little man who was closer 17.2) over the man she loved greater, Heathcliff. The changing hexigram 58 shows the two offspring of Cathy, and Linton: Hareton and Cathy. Two strong lines within, expressing themselves through gentleness.

You're very welcome. I haven't read WH but I think I will do now...

I really like The Constant Earth as a title but I would maybe develop it slightly to "The ... and Constant Earth", with the missing word perhaps being dark or something similar that represents the tone of the book as a whole. As I've not read it though perhaps I'm not in a position to advise!

If you are keen to know more about Wuthering Heights I'd recommend the recent BBC TV adaption (2009 I think) with Tom Hardy and Catherine Reilly. In parts it's not quite strictly accurate, but I found it excellent.

I am hesitant to say anything because of the importance of titles in the commercial success of books.
If landscape figures in your illustrations, then maybe "Wuthering Heights: Passion and Earth". Property, class, and passions are blended with geographical influences. Wuthering Heights is high land in a moor, isn't it? I am reminded of The Secret Garden -- the mix of the vitality of wildness and the debility of conventional culture.

Hi DSW,

Hmmm, interesting that the cast would be about Earth when the original title is Wuthering (=howling wind) Heights. However, it seems to reflect the results of straying from the Earth/Receptive path, kind of a "Lost in Paradise" or line 5 "dragons fight in the meadow" theme, maybe a pattern to follow...

Thank you everyone for your comments - I'll let you know the reception of some titles along these lines when I meet with my supervisor.

iams girl - that connection was exactly what I thought of too!

Pocossin - this will be an "art book" (very limited edition) so commercial success is not in its future. But your comments were very helpful to me.

Hi,
I decided to call the book: "Two"

I thought this was the most appropriate title because while the others were beautiful, "Two" allowed the meanings and themes in the book to grow in the reader's own mind. I thought this best expressed the meaning of the hexagram Kun, and also expressed the book simply and powerfully.

Thanks once again for your help
