I can read, for example, Hexagram 10 line 6:
Hilary's translation: Observe the footsteps, blessings from the ancestors.
They come full circle: good fortune from the source.

Since I had a dream about pink footsteps in the snow in the woods of my father's, I am going to think of this first and that image and memory will impact my end result of what the Yi says to me.

If I am reading for someone else...... I still would be using the symbols that speak to ME right?? ........ Maybe it is a balance to take into consideration the other person and what the book could be saying to them vs me?? Someone help me with this!

When reading for someone else, do I still use the symbols that speak to me? What if it only adheres to my life and wouldn't make sense to the other person??

Take Care!

Hi AQ,

Unfortunelly, I don't do reading for others so I can't give any helpful response, but you raised an interesting question about the "interpersonal" symbolic language between ourselves and Yi. I was about to open a tread about it the other day because of a reading of mine.

Hex 29 was an answer I got for a important matter. I have connected 29 with a couple of actions and apart from what the text says it has a special meaning for me. The matter I asked for is at the same realm of those past two matters. when i got 29 for that I chuckled.I felt like Yi winked at me and said. You know how it is, you have done it before, lol.

either we talk about our reading or reading for others, the question remains the same, imo. Which "language" we use when there is a strong association which a personal symbolic language and a reading.? Do we ignore those special meanings or not?

sometimes I feel , when i get a reading, is that the reason I got a specific line or hex is because there is a catalyst there , a word, a phrase a image, a past experience and this catalyst helps me retrieve from my mind, guts something I have forgot. If you were doing a reading for me, I would like to have the space to find my own symbol in that reading but sharing your symbol wouldn't hurt me I think. Its a delicate balance, the ways i see it but if handle with care I see not big problem. Its like talking with a friend and sharing experiences. Some are meaningful to others some are not.

Hi Answeredquestions,

This is what any Hexagram comprises of, 6 lines; the first two lines represent Yin and Yang of Earth, the lines 3 and 4 represent Yin and Yang of People, and lines 5 and 6 represent Yin and Yang of Heaven. I Ching said, ‘Heaven, Earth, Human and the universe is Unity/Oneness/Wholeness. Close use one’s self or surrounding, and far use one’s neighborhood, country, the world, or the universe”. Reading for our self or for anybody is the same. However, if a person consult the oracle and we read it should always be correct; but for any reason we have to consult the oracle for them, then the reader has to be in a very deep concentration or conscientious. Otherwise, the oracle is only apply to the reader himself.

However, your dream was about the footsteps of your father on snow. Snow is something pretty but unstable. It can be melting at anytime or will be covering by new snow shortly after. Seem like the meaning of it is some thing not real, or not true, or just pretending to be, or something that stuck for longtime will soon pass or be over soon. Everything will be ok soon. This is something to consider if it resemble to the reality of your case. Perhaps, it is just about the question you are asking.

Hope this would help.

This is how I feel too.

...and I think you are exactly right about it being just like friends talking and sharing ideas. That makes sense. When I do a reading for someone, I think I will first let the symbols speak to them, then after discussion, I might chime in with what the symbols mean to me if they are relevent.

Hi again, AQ.

I think it's a good question. It's difficult to sort our personal experience and associations from the actual text, especially so when reading for someone else, one to one. How much is pure divination, and how much is our natural cognitive ability to assemble images, to illustrate them in our deeper and more subtle mind, otherwise called imagination. If my imagination is involved with offering my interpretation, that's not necessarily a bad thing; it may actually be an inspiring thing. But it should be clearly distinguished from the actual text, I believe.

We all have quirky experiences and intimate associations with hexagrams and lines, I think. It's when one gets the blank stare from the person's response to the text that one gets the impression that ones own experience will, in some way, be called into the equation, to help interpret or translate the idea to the other person's world. But even then, not directly. The idea should arise in them.

I think this is very true.

....I was thinking. I believe I might ask the person I am reading for, before I do the reading, what they would like. "Would you like me to incorporate symbols from MY experiences and intuition"?

Then it will be clear to me, and them, if my symbols will be incorporated or not.

And also it will be clear to the divine messanger what My, and the person I'm reading for's, intentions are. That should get a crisp reading!

____ ____ _________

If they do want my symbols, I will just go about my reading and state when it is based on something from within me.

If they do not want my symbols, hurt as I might be (JK), I am not quite sure how to go about giving them their reading. Hmmm. I will want to give intuitional imput, but I suppose I will just read passages from the various books I have, and the websites I use, regarding specific lines and hexagrams.

If anyone has done readings for people and has purposely NOT used their intuitions and experiences etc, I would still like input.

I am just not clear on this. I need Clarity!

Crisp readings. Oh, how nice that sounds. :)

But I think it's a question more than an answer, that an interpreter presents, which can only be answered by the one we're interpreting for. I don't view my job is to answer their question, only to convey in easier terms what Yi presents.

I agree with making designations, but I classify them as: a) would you like to know the time? b) or how to make a watch? If someone wants to understand better the inner workings of "what's really going on here", or if they just want a more simple guidance answer, will help determine my approach. It indirectly asks the same kind of question as yours. But to me, symbols can be woven through the fabric, so long as they are symbols the one I'm interpreting for can personally identify with. Otherwise we're already in deeper territory, and it becomes teaching and imparting. It also taps more into our personal experience and understanding.

hi AQ,

I think you are voicing a fair question here . . still, there's something about it that I can almost see but not quite to its entirety; I'll give it a try though -this might get wordy but it's because I'm trying myself to grasp it in the background

I think part of the answer may be in the way you view these symbols as YOURS . . for me there is a whole lot of subtlety to be cleared there. Take the dream for example, footsteps outside your father's house, ie close to home but not quite. Now the footsteps are not necessarily you, but they are a trace that can give you a story, or lead you to find your own. I'm gonna take a further step and say that the story you'll make out of them is yours (or half-yours); it's how you consciously put together what crossed your path to validate your history or past (or perhaps, to validate the story you have created for your history or past).

Now your story might resonate (validate?) with, say, my reading's story, or it might leave me wondering. But if we keep to the story of the footprints then it might open a place or clear a path, where meanings can be found -not necessarily a single meaning, or the same meaning for all but the meaning we are looking for.

Iow, I think divination comes very close to storytelling. We all love stories in all their different forms, some because they remind us too much of our life, some because they allow us to leave aside our life for a while and see the world through different eyes. Or, because through stories we can make a full circle, outside and then back in. To me it looks like going inside is analysis, going outside is imagination and in the middle stands the diviner/storyteller.

I think it's not an easy place to stand in - I find the hardest part of it in that most times we might get too compelled to tell our story, or find it somewhere waiting for us. But in live readings I think that with some mindfulness, it's easier to leave aside that need, because things are more fluid, more improvisational, more subject to the flow of time and the interactions it unfolds.

To wrap this up, I think it's good to offer the symbols you've been given, maybe even offer your stories of them too, not so much in order to guess or cement their truth so much as to share a view of the traces . . then you can go on and make stories and these stories can be alive and changing in time and constantly evolving, both for you and for the person you read for. And if it still doesn't make any sense you can stop mulling over it and let it go . .

(p.s: I'll be away from my computer for a couple of days, if there are any comments on this I'll answer asap)

Thanks for your responses. Yeah, I get this feeling that I am suppose to share my symbols with the readings I give.

I think that is part of the process and it is natural to do so. Since everything is so interwoven and every communication thruought life is a glimpse of the bigger fabric of the universe, it would be silly to cut out my threads of the picture.

The person receiving the reading has the choice of how much of the blanket they want to explore, which threads to use (mine, their own, etc) and what patches they will be using.

Like sooo said, "a) would you like to know the time? b) or how to make a watch? "

Either way, I am going to give them all the information I can and that may include "how to make the watch". ... If they chose to just get the time out of it, that is ok.

rodaki- I see what you mean about the symbols not exactly being MINE. I am just part of a collective. Perhaps it is as easy as that, to look at it that way.

Thanks you guys.

I really liked this part. It makes sense. Full Circle. Shared Ideas. Bouncing in and out of Perspectives.

sounds like you're making your own watch with your blanket metaphor ;)
Sometimes this seems like the more I look at a reading the more watch-ings I find . . then I think it's a matter of finding the right time that will fit yours and the querent's timezones best
