Im self employed. I was offered a small project which I have no time for at the moment. But it bothers me to leave the client in a lurch. I forwarded the offer to someone who may be able to do it. And (for complicated reasons) I am now having second thoughts. This person has been going through a rough time, and Im a bit concerned he will let me or the client down.

So I asked: what to do about this situation, for everyone's highest good? 51.5>17.

51.5. i read as I will have repeated shocks or frights, but if I stay centered all will be well, and I will lose neither client nor friend. And 17: there is a line that worries me: even joyous movement can lead to evil consequences, hence perseverance in doing right matters. I acted spontaneously, seeing this as a win win, but what if i turns out to be a bad idea for everyone? i should have thought it through first..'.Now the cat is out of the bag.

Apart from staying centered and not rushing into any action, I dont see the advice here. Any suggestions?

Well, generally, the lines of the relating/changing hexagram are not part of the reading, so no need to be concerned with them.

17 can be, and I think is intended to be encouragement to follow along your path. It's one of the rare times we can rest assured. But for the time being, there's nothing productive that can be actively done about it.

51.5... to me, it's as though one shock keeps another shock from knocking me over. It's more like a "that figures", or "when it rains, it pours." You adjust faster, once you gain your bearings; you rise to the occasion more readily, I believe. It's like being engaged in military combat compared to suddenly getting randomly attacked. You get into the groove and rise to the occasion, one would hope.

Interesting Meng...so you see 51.5 as an accelerated learning curve, a baptism by fire? I had not thought of it that way. Thanks, you know it makes sense in my situation, which involves dealing with a somewhat volatile person... The advice "there are things to be done" is not terribly illuminating... Maybe a clue from the image of the judgement, which says "the superior person sets his life in order and examines himself"... Maybe a chance to figure out why i find volatile people so unnerving, and how to deal with it. I will just have to see how it evolves and mull on it for a while.

That said, I do find 51.5 rather cryptic!

Six in the fifth place means:
Shock goes hither and thither.
Danger.
However, nothing at all is lost.
Yet there are things to be done.

I think it's simple ! Yi's way of saying "just get on with it !" there's lots of  flying about and in the midst of that you hold your nerve and get on with what needs to be done.

I don't think this line is about introspecting about volatile people at all,,,,it's more like' just deal with it'. Don't hang about staring at your navel...move ! :D it's a 'feel the fear and do it anyway' kind of line.

I acted spontaneously, seeing this as a win win, but what if i turns out to be a bad idea for everyone? i should have thought it through first..'.Now the cat is out of the bag.

drop that line of thinking....carry on acting spontaneously, you gotta roll with it

Candidly, I hadn't thought of 51.5 as an accelerated learning curve or as trial by fire, in those terms, but you're right, shock does move things along more quickly and easily.

I can also see it as a stabilizing influence in dealing with a volatile situation or person, including ones own self, so that when one does shake off the dust and move ahead, they do so with regained composure and clarity.

This reminds me of the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and the various extreme shocks the departed one experiences. Even the message, to not indulge those fearsome deities, and even less the benevolent appearing deities. Shocks go hither and thither, and, as the story goes, one is shocked again and again into unconsciousness.. the deities and all the fear, trembling and awe they bring, fade into darkness. Then there's darkness and loneliness, all sort of fears that cause one to 'fall away' or faint. Meanwhile, a monk guides the departed through this Bardo of shocking images. There are still things to do, existence doesn't end here. The Bardo offers a way back to this world, where we have another go at it, and where we can have the security of having physical things and people and pets to hold onto.

The Buddha with many arms and weapons, holds one finger to the ground, which says, be not afraid; nothing is happening.

My guess without knowing the details

This is not a good situation.

Hexagram 51 is a six strike hexagram, line 1/4, 2/5, 3/6 are in conflicts with each other.

When it changes, the new hexagram has the upper trigram as tui metal and lower hexagram as chen wood. The metal suppresses the wood. The Chinese translation shows that this deal will not close. There are disputes. You spend more time worrying about it.

The six line layout is more complicated because I do not know who is the male (line 5) and who is the female (line 3).

Line 1 is the document zi water anmd is also the empty element under your month and day of the reading. This is bad and is equivalent to the document or project does not exist.

The line 3 female chen earth is resting in the grave. Not doing anything.

The line 5 officer line (man, do not know whether he is your male client. He is shen metal and is in conflict with you system (month of reading yin wood). He changes to take a step forward to you metal. That line is merging with the line 3 chen earth female. The man has a connection to the line 3 female. The man is sort of not very serious about the events.

51.5 means the situation is full of danger and you have to do more than your share. If this is a project, it is a loss for you in terms of time.

Things will return to normal because line 6 produces line 5 and then line 4. The line 4 is document or report or project. The line 6 female has to do a lot to get things to return back to normal.

Thank you all for your thoughts!

Long Yi, very intriguing analysis. There are 2 men in this story: the client, and the friend who i sent the work to. I assume the main character is the friend, as he is the one Im concerned about. And I am the only female here.

I am still waiting for this situation to play out. The friend accepted the project. I introduced him to the client and stepped back, letting them come to an agreement and sort out the arrangements on their own. I effectively removed myself from the situation. Perhaps that was the prudent thing to do, given that reading!

As for the repeated shocks and danger...so far have not really experienced that. My experience feels closest to what Trojan is describing: very busy time, a lot of things to deal with, getting on with it. That said, the project is still ongoing, another 2 weeks to go. So time will tell! If there are any significant developments, I will keep you posted.

Final update: the project went perfectly well. Client and friend are happy. No trouble for me at all. I think the 51.5 "shocks" were not external events, but may have been anxieties of my own making, questioning my decisions after the fact and scaring myself needlessly!

Should I re employ? 63.1.3.4.6>12

It has been nearly a year since this event. And now, another project has come up for which I considered bringing in the same person. Who, as you recall, was somewhat unstable. But seems OK now, would be really good to have on board, and that last project worked out well, so why not? I asked the question of whether to bring him in again, and cast:

63.1.3.4.6>12

Yikes, run and don't look back! But I find the lines really interesting, and I thought I would share as a follow up on the original thread.

63: all in balance, but can be derailed by the tiniest detail. Good start, bad ending
63.1: had a close call, but no harm done. I think that is about the previous project, I took a risk and it went well.
63.3: do not employ him, it would take years of inner work for him to conquer his demons
63.4: do not be fooled by the apparent stability, the underlying illness is still there, albeit concealed. Do not neglect the omens.
63.6: move on, don't pause, don't even look back! You cannot handle this, your project will sink
12: instability on the rise, do not associate, withdraw.

Bottom line: last time I was lucky (possibly because I "braked" and limited my involvement in the situation). There could have been problems as suggested by Long Yi, but it turned out OK. But I really shouldn't push my luck!
