7.5 > 29

7.
The army needs perseverance
And a strong man.
Good fortune without blame.

Thus the superior man increases his masses
By generosity toward the people.

0 Six in the fifth place means:
There is game in the field.
It furthers one to catch it.
Without blame.
Let the eldest lead the army.
The younger transports corpses;
Then perseverance brings misfortune.

29.
The Abysmal repeated.
If you are sincere, you have success in your heart,
And whatever you do succeeds.

Water flows on uninterruptedly and reaches its goal;
The image of the Abysmal repeated.
Thus the superior man walks in lasting virtue
And carries on the business of teaching.

7.5 He let's the young and inexperienced have too much influence.

29. Let that serve as a lesson to us all.

Just found this in An Illuminated I Ching:

"7.5 Mob rule will bring misfortune."

Oooh, Tony, this does not look good.

Well, the series end was a perfect 29. Danger on all sides, but nothing conclusive happened. Tony (apparently) survived but what where can his life go from here? I guess it just goes on. The background theme was "Don't Stop (thinking about tomorrow)."

of course, he must inevitably get whacked. i dont think he was a psychopath though. just a person who had worn down his conscience from a sharp point to a dull nud

I missed this thread and only became a fan from A&E reruns. The series is brilliant and true to real form for that era in mob history.

The finale pissed a lot of viewers off, but it made the most sense to end in suspense, yet with the implied conclusion that Tony would get whacked. He knew it was coming, and the struggle within his dual nature of sensitive guy and ruthless animal did, I think, make him crazy eventually, and unable to function in either capacity.

PS: Course, like Rosada said, maybe tomorrow he's back. Lot of things could have happened rather than Tony getting hit. Great reading, Rosada!

May sound strange, but the end had the same feel to me as 2001 A Space Odyssey.

I dug up this old thread after just finishing the series from start to finsh.

really hard to fathom that dichotomy of tender heart vs ruthlessness...which only really seemed to come to focus in AJ, the son. he was the only one who seemed to suffer the effects in a tangible way, and still live. I kept waiting for the moment when Tony would finally break down and sob, for the shell to crack, the lie to become too painful.

even if he did survive, what then? does a mob boss ever retire to Belise and live the golden years in contentment? and what was all the symbolism in that last scene. parking the BMW? everybody coming in separately. the onion rings. the western type burger joint. were the wrters saying something..or did they just get bored finally? it ended not with a bang but a whimper. that was disappointing!

Yes, AJ is the one you worry for most. Could go either way, better or worse with him, and he did try to commit suicide. Irony that Tony would be the one to pull him out of the pool, but also natural, as he's the father of the family. Lot of paradoxes and contradictions, inner conflicts of priorities. But pride is the overriding element, at least with the up-and-comers.

In my NJ high school there were young wannabes, some who were actually connected and eager to begin working their way up, already robbing houses, laughing about the owner, who they assaulted with a pipe. Kids, just desensitized kids, eager to be somebody. Scary people, already.
