I came across this talk the other day and found it interesting in particular about how personal boundaries can be overridden by the need for attachment and the possible consequences of consistently allowing such encroachment.

I think illness can arise from myriad factors so I don't take his hypothesis as 100% aplicable but still found it very interesting

Thanks for sharing this. I watched some, but not all of it, and I agree that I don't think what he's saying always applies, but it certainly can be a factor. But there is so much that makes up a life, I don't think simple formulas of 'why' and 'cause and effect' always work.

Best, D.

Same it's not 100% applicable BUT it's something I've believed and tried to be mindful in myself for years.
Personally I was diagnosed with PTSD with apparently little chance of recovery in June last year.
Such a relief to have a diagnose and understanding of why I behaved in the way I did, the decisions I made and constantly lived in fear.
But the truth of why I ended up with PTSD is because I lived in denial and repressed the things that happened to me.

Of course with regard to the content of the video the fatal flaw in his hypothesis is he has no data for all the people who don't get ill yet are endlessly self sacrificing in the same way as those who do. He has noticed something in his patients but has no way to measure how many well people also have these character traits he speaks of. It's not science, doesn't pretend to be, it's an observational insight which is interesting and may have validity though it cannot be measured. However there's so many other variables to consider in each individual case isolating one psychological/behavioural factor as 'the cause' isn't realistic- but still interesting anyway.

I read somewhere that where cause of an illness is not known then all kinds of moral, philosophical theories build up around it as to it's cause. This happened with the stomach ulcer. For years and years the stomach ulcer was attributed to stress and life style until they discovered it was actually caused by a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori which they can now treat simply with antibiotics.

I enjoyed his languid delivery.

All good points Trojina. My friends sister died a couple of years ago at age 52 of breast cancer. Many said she was their rock through hard times but I (and my friend) never saw her that way. I always thought she was extremely self absorbed and mean and she died still feuding with her sons wife.
