The ending hexagram 56 seems pretty apt for the question. I asked if the person will return for the winter break. I know it is highly unlikely, though as he just returned.

The Yijing seems to say no? Did I read it wrong?
line 62.6 seems to say that the opportunity is passed by, but, hex 56 seems to indicate travelling. Does it mean travelling home?

thanks for anyone who could shed insight.

Hex 62 means Lying Low, Small Exceeding. Karcher says about line 6:

You meet it nowhere, you exceed it (pass it by).
This is the flying bird's radiance. The way is closed.
This is called a calamity and an error.

Commentary: You will not accomplish anything like this. You overreach yourself, flying higher and higher. The time is wrong and the way is closed. Do not act like this. You invite disaster from without and within.

Karcher on corresponding line 56.6:

The bird burns its nest.
Sojourning people first laugh, then cry out and sob.
You lose your cattle to versatility.
The way is closed.

Commentary: You are flirting with disaster. You may laugh now, but you will soon be crying. You will lose your home and all your goods. Whatever it is, do not do it! The way is definitely closed.

Depending on where he is right now, where you are right now, and exactly what and where you mean "returning" to be, this could all simply mean that you won't be seeing him over winter break. Possibly because he'll be "Lying Low" where he is now, or travelling to someplace you are not. You'll "pass each other by in your travels" in other words.

HOWEVER. The lines are kind of ominous, aren't they? We here don't know what the history of your relationship is, or what you'd like it to be, or why you want to see him, or what you plan to do or say if you do see him, or how he'd likely react. The lines certainly do allow for interpreting this as NOT something you should be pursuing (62.2), and/or what might SEEM like a good idea, or START OUT well, will end badly (56.6).

I guess (to complicate matters further) it could be referring EITHER to your actual *relationship* (that is, things between the two of you will go badly) - OR - to any *travelling* you might try to do, possibly in order to see him (that is, a car accident, a travel-related broken ankle, lost luggage ("losing your cattle")...some travel-related, rather than relationship-related, mishap.

Depending on the background of this situation - which you know and we don't - you might want to try a follow-up question. For example, if you are pursuing this fellow romantically but are not actually now in a relationship with him, you might want to ask Yi a question about that. If you ARE on fine terms with him, and you can honestly see no reason why that would change, you might want to try pinning Yi down about the travel aspects.

I think your knowledge of the background of this is important.

I will just add that line 56.6 has absolutely no bearing on this question.

Hi Lanie, thank you for the interpretation at length. You're very right about that. Actually we aren't really in a solid relationship at all. I was just wondering if he'll fly back, not to see me, but for a large part yes, am hoping to see him. I don't mean return as in return to me, but fly back here.

I agree it seems ominous. I guess I won't see him afterall; there was no mention of him coming back at all, and winter break starts in 2 weeks. He usually plans ahead. Was hoping for a surprise there, it would be good to see him again, for what its worth.

You say in your first post that he "has just returned" but in your last post you seem to be saying that he has not returned, which is correct?

Is he still abroad as the answer suggests?

Yes willowfox, what I mean is he flew back home for the summer break (which I missed) and returned to his current location, so I was wondering if he would be back home for winter as well. Sorry it was confusing. I haven't seen him for a long time because we were in different locations.

Your answer indicates no he will not be back.
