It's a question that sometimes comes to mind. I don't like the idea that we can mess up one planet and simply move on to another without clearing up the mess we've made. But then I see we are searching for habitable exoplanets, and I wonder if part of our purpose is to learn from our mistakes and begin again elsewhere.

Hilary's commentary on the Sequence of 49 with 48 The Well seems particularly apt: "over time, human regimes fall out of harmony with the Way. Reconnecting with the unchanging source requires you to change the way you live." And then her commentary on the contrasting pair of 50, The Vessel: "before you can found the new, you must remove the old."
On the words of line 5, Hilary comments: "a beautiful new creation is being chosen and designed here. This is to be celebrated! ... this can usher in a whole new order, and bring the gift of confidence and independent strength."
But is the "thing of beauty" our own transformed Earth, or the new planets we move on to?
When I look on her article about 55, the illustration is...a rocket launch!!!
But still, 55 and 49 together suggest, to me, transforming the place where we live, rather than moving on.
Any thoughts? Interested to know if you think that 55.5 is a "breaking out" of the darkness of lines 1-4 and a movement away from the home that has been created in 54 Marrying Maiden and towards 56 the Traveller...
The corresponding line, 49.5, shows a completed transformation, a tiger who has moulted and in whom faith has been restored even before consulting the oracle.
So I guess whichever way it goes, whether we leave or stay, it's a pleasantly auspicious reading for the future of humanity...
