Will I be successful if I go to graduate school for Philosophy?

I received Hexagram 8.2.3 which changed into Hexagram 48.

For Hexagram 8:
Line 2
The movement to unity comes from within. Righteous persistence brings good fortune.
Line 3
He joins with those who are unfit.

For Hexagram 48:
I took this as the body has basic needs and going to graduate school may not help me get the resources I need to survive like a decent job and decent money.

Can someone shed some light on this please...

Hex 8 can be pointing us to look at what are the important foundations that we need to have in place to be true to ourselves.
This seems to be asking you to consider what you mean by "successful", because if you are not really committed to this venture (Line 2) and fall into bad behaviours because you are not really committed to it's "success" then there is a real chance that you will not get all the fulfillment and nourishment that you need from it.

This is one for you to ponder. What do you see as being successful and can you commit fully to making that picture of success happen.
THE WELL. The town may be changed,
But the well cannot be changed.
It neither decreases nor increases.
They come and go and draw from the well.
If one gets down almost to the water
And the rope does not go all the way,
Or the jug breaks, it brings misfortune.

By successful, I meant would I land a decent job that I want (teaching). Or would the work that I put in yield fruitful results.

I think my_keys' explanation still holds water, (the jug at the well) jp78. I know you are looking for a specific answer but things are not always that easy. I think the answer is right on.

The key here is hexagram forty eight, for it is said that the town may be changed, but the well cannot. In other words, what nourished us before is exactly what will nourish us in the future. We will still get our nourishment from the same source. Does that say don't do it? No! but it does call us to examine our own heart as to whether we are called to the task or not.

The I Ching is not so simple. It doesn't necessarily give us straightforward answers. It makes us think about our own selves, and our own motives. The question is, will your jug break? That is up to you.

looks like a you gonna be a teacher

lol

I was thinking that maybe Philosophy is not the proper track for you. It is possible the major would be already full, or you would not be accepted into it for various reasons..8.2 talks about an inside connection.

the Well is the abundance of courses of study- or maybe other avenues for a lifepath- available.......there is an opportunity to return to the well and decide how you will fill your cup.

FWIW, I think the yi would respond more immediately to your question, rather than jump ahead to how well you would fare with such a degree. Instead I think it would more typically speak to the immediate issues surrounding your idea...eg, is it the right course for you, would you be successful in getting into the program, and so on. 8.2 might be asking you if this truly calls to you, or are you simply mulling it over?

As for Gene’s comment in regards to Hexagram 48 and nourishment, I like to believe that philosophy has always made me feel more like myself. Studying it and discussing it in class with my peers brought some fulfillment I couldn’t find in my other classes or prior jobs. Being able to articulate inner thoughts with great philosophers in class always impressed my teachers and peers, but I just didn’t choose it as an undergraduate major b/c its not applicable to today’s world of business. Now, I have no choice but to get my MA to prepare my for my dissertation for my phD program, therefore maybe hexagram 8.3.

As for Gatos comments and me joining those who are unfit. Well, I initially thought of that as a positive comment in regards to 8.3 because “we must be aware of entering into associations with people who surround us, but who are not of our way of thinking. The Superior Man does not spurn those below or above him, but opens his heart only to those who are his equals.” But, as bamboo pointed out Philosophy may be not correct track for me because I join with those who are unfit and with ppl “who are not of our way of thinking”. I guess I saw it from a different perspective, but it does make sense.

As for my jug breaking becoming a professor in Philosophy will be a difficult task, but I’m willing to at least get my MA. Then I must get my phD. Sure, the jug can break, but if I don’t try I’ll never know. Maybe my mind will change after I obtain my MA in Phil and I won’t want to even get my phD, but if I don’t at least try then doesn’t that just make me coward or some mindless person just doing something for no reason. While I can imagine myself doing other professions, I like to get to the very bottom of things and to rummage in books.
