Will I get the job?

I'm applying for a teaching post which has the massive advantage of an ongoing contract; they don't want someone for just a year or two, they want someone longterm. It has the disadvantage that it's not well paid and I suspect some of the work conditions might be a bit exploitative. I reckon I can handle it, though, and I would welcome the security.

I am extremely well qualified for this job and it is similar to previous posts i have held. I say that without boasting since it just happens to be a job I have done before!

I asked the Yi, "WIll I get the job?" yeah, a bit of an immature question in a way, but sometimes answers to these questions are more illuminating than one might at first expect I have found.

The Yi responded

hexagram 54, line 2, changing to hexagram 51.

Hm!! Hang on, there's something better over the horizon? Now's not the time, but later? 54 captures the nature of the job very well - subordinate, secondary, half-in and half-out...

Any thoughts very much appreciated! Thank you. G

The various texts on this line, 54.2, seem to say to stay in a positive state of mind. They don't actually say that this particular job will come through for you . . . Let us know what happens!

Personally, the Yi never gives me yes/no answers. I have asked about jobs on numerous occasions.
For instance, I asked "Will I get the job" and received 14.6 which seemed like a yes, -- but then I did not get the job.
conversely, I have received warning lines, though I end up getting the job in question.
Maybe in your case, 54.2 to 51
offers your counsel about how best to succeed? it sounds like you are very qualified for the job. How do you feel inwardly about the job?
51 can speak to : making an impact, like a thunder clap.
54.2: there are things that you are not able to see here, and it's a good idea to keep on your guard, and to be solitary until the clarity arises.

Hello
I had this casting about a job (teaching) once. Similar in many aspects - I was offered the job and accepted but then a better one came along. I had to break contract (only after a week -after accepting so no real harm). I could not apply in that authority again. The job I took was far better - and the original job actually got someone less qualified but more suitable for their post.

I think that a positive attitude towards your abilities is needed here
Good luck

Wow this was really helpful thank you! I am in the last stages of the application and I'll let you know what comes of it all...

I think this might be one of those situations where the question is how '54' you're prepared to be about things: how subordinate, how modest, how patient. Not sure in myself about the answer to that at this point, but maybe the outcome will turn on it.

Thanks for sharing this one. It's a perfect example on why I consider Wen Wang Gua a better suit for predictive questions.

From a text-based perspective, it's so easy to focus yourself on the text for the sixth line of hexagram 14: He is blessed by heaven. Good fortune. Nothing that does not further. So, it's understandable why you thought this was a yes.

The first thing you notice in a 14zhi34 answer, from a Wen Wang Gua perspective is that 34 is a total clash hexagram. That would immediately light a warning sign (as a general indication, a total clash hexagram in a yes/no question means NO). Since this happen only in the changed hexagram, it is not fated, it is not a conclusive sign, you need to look carefuly th whole answer. Then you can see the line representing you is Chen (earth) and the line representing the job is Si (fire) and it is the active line; this is a positive sign, since fire produces earth!!!. But then, the earthly branch of line 6th after change is Xu (earth). Xu and Chen clashes one to each other!!!.. then no, although this seems like a good job for you and initially some positive signs are in the air, the whole answer leads to a NO.

Hi Sixth Relative, Thank you for the explanation.
Your methods are interesting and offer new perspectives.
Although I do, sometimes, ask for predictions from the Yi, in general predictions are psychologically not helpful for me, because if I give too much importance to a prediction, it tends to take me away from my FREE CHOICE in the present moment to change my life and a given situation.
Still, I respect the methods you offer. Thanks.

Yeah; my same attitude.

That reminds me this post from Joseph Yu: The future is not written on the rocks.
"Some people believe that Yijing is used to tell the future as written on the rocks but it is simply an utterly wrong idea. Yijing is to tell us what we will encounter in the future but the outcome is not fixed. Yijing does not tell us how we will react to what we encounter in the future. We have our free will to do whatever and this will determine the outcome. "

hi, this line especially , usually we can change the outcome, or that's the idea of consulting the Iching , to see the possibilities for action, given the likely unfolding of events.
If I'm given a prediction, furthermore, sometimes it inhibits me because I can feel either discouraged (doomed, fated to negative outcomes) or too elated (certain I'll win, and pride comes before the fall).
So, predictions work best for me when I'm totally detached from the outcome.

Yeah; my same attitude.

Hi, with 54.2 > 51 it's very unlikely that you will get the job, which I don't think it would be good for you anyway. But please let us know.

I didn't get the job.

I realised as I looked more closely at it that it was deefinitely an effort to get in a young person, yiunger than me, to do dogsbody work. Plus, I found out since they had an internal candidate.

So that fits. Things you can't see....
