Hello,

I threw a false reading.. not sure what to do about that. I cast a hexagram but didn't keep track of moving lines! Should I just ignore this hexagram? It was hex. 34 Ta Chuang and I was asking if should drop a class.

Some background: I'm in college (computer science major) and trying to decide before tomorrow whether to take this summer off to devote myself to an internship I was accepted for, or take a course that may benefit me in the upcoming Fall/Spring in multiple ways. Note that I could do both at the same time, scheduling would allow it.

I do not need to take the course, it won't count towards any kind transfer credit when I transition from community college to UC Irvine. However, the course would help me to help more people at my job as a math tutor on campus during Fall/Spring. It also would help me later at UCI as a background in case I wanted to get into data science topics.

So after starting class, I found out about an internship position at a startup I consulted the I Ching for guidance but made the major error in making the hexagram.

After a day, I was still hesitant and feeling paralyzed with indecision. I didn't want to be overloaded this summer and wanted to rest (I just finished an entire year taking a crazy amount of classes and only receiving one B as my lowest grade). So, I consulted the I ching again today (with one day left to drop the class without penalty) -- asking for more " insight concerning the situation with school."

I threw hex. 58 (which seems to be about rest) with lines move at 1, 3, and 6 turning ultimately to 44.

Hex 58 -- Opening
Line 1:
Harmonious exchange, auspicious. (Contented joyousness. Good fortune.)

I didn't have a harmonious exchange with the professor in the beginning. I was late the first two days of class and he was unhappy about this. On the other hand, I did have a harmonious exchange with the project manager at the startup I applied for.

If this line changes it would become Hex. 47 Enclosed tree/ Oppression: "When one has something to say, It is not believed.... There is not water in the lake: The image of EXHAUSTION." It reads to me like I if I find myself in a situation where I'm not able to devote the outside hours necessary to shine at the internship while also maintaining an 'A' AND being on time to class. I'm also having car troubles right now so circumstances could very easily be created that throw a wrench unexpectedly in my ability to drive to school (whereas the internship work is programming related that I can do without commuting).

Line 3:

Expectant exchange, pitfall. (Coming joyousness. Misfortune.)

I have slightly selfish reasons for wanting to take the class. I could earn more money at my job as a math tutor on campus if I have taken it.

Changes to Hex. 17 (Follow without Resistance / Following ) "Thus the superior man at nightfall
Goes indoors for rest and recuperation."

Maybe it's time to retreat from that school I slaved at night and day for the past three seasons (Fall/Winter/Spring 15'-16').

Line 6:

Continue exchange. (Seductive joyousness.)

This line I don't understand. I may be diverted by a lack of discipline or vanity (maybe spending too much time on social media rather than get into a healthy rhythm this summer while diving into the internship )?

It changes to hex. 10 (Treading / footprints of the ancestors) Stepping on the tiger's tail. He does not bite man. Expansion.

This resonates with a possible future where I continue with the class and the undertaking this summer was actually much easier than anticipated. No harm no foul.

---

And then finally the hexagram as a whole would change to hexagram 44. "Coming to meet / Heir." The maiden is powerful. One should not marry such a maiden.

I'm not sure about this. It seems to suggest that the class and the professor is not compatible with what I need right now on the Path. Purely extraneous, wasted effort, not directly required for my degree.

Even in writing this I have come to a kind of resoluteness in dropping the class before census locks it onto my transcript. But I am very interested in any, even the briefest insights by anyone on here. I've loved reading this forum for years, always surprised at the creative agility many display for making sense out an a hexagram's twists and turns.

All the best.

Hi karmicoil,

I would scratch the first cast and go with the second.

58 is about communication, so ~

1 - See your professor, explain your situation, and drop the class

3 - Start the internship, it goes well, they want you to continue in the Fall ~ more money than tutoring ~ car breaks down ~ negotiate.

6 - Keep communicating with the internship, it may lead to opportunity at UCI.

Great job with school, so far ~ keep it up!

Many blessings!

PS - At some point, possibly in July, you will meet a strong woman who could possibly overload your schedule.

Thank you! I really appreciate the reply.

I dropped the class (yet haven't talked to the professor... I just dropped it via the school's website).
