Yarrow odds dont have to be asymmetrical.
To get symmetry all you do is put two aside at the start instead of one.988 becomes 888 & 544 becomes 444. Symmetry.
Putting three aside reverses the asymmetry in favour of yin.
The logic is in favour of the traditional asymmetry.Yang tt movement. YIN tt stillness.

6789 would become 5678 if you started with 46 sticks instead of 50.
It looks like the 6789 were determined by the texts of H.19 & H.24 giving 7 & 8 for static yin & yang.
Also yang is trad. odd, yin even.

ps.I have originated two double A4 sized charts which break down all 4096 yijing probabilities into groups of 7,28 & 84 groups with the same probabilities.
They also show the structure of the combinations & how they are spread across the 7 groups of hexagrams by yang lines.
Maybe I will pass them on to someone who knows Office if I ever get around to a polished written finished product. Cue 30.1- 56. :bows:

yarrow observations

sticks aside 1st.operation overall odds lines
0 6666 4084 789 10
1 9555 1357 6789
2 8844 2266 6789
3 7773 3175 6789
4 6666 4084 6789
5 9555 1357 5678

6789 Nine is the highest digit & that may be a part of it. Also 9 is associated with the Emperor?

Three operations produce 4 kinds of lines. 2nd & 3rd ops. always 8 or 4 , odds 1 over 2 & use a multiple of 4 sticks.

Division by 4 decides the line proportions. 4 is the one that fits , giving balanced proportions.

2 is workable as a divisor if the method is changed :
24 sticks , nothing aside , nothing added to remainders after division by 2.
Result is always 4 or 2.
Mov. yin is 6 x 2 + 444 rem. Mov.yang is 9 x 2 + 222 rem.

More to come on yijing probabilities & combinations.

yijing probability figures

I could never seem to find any meaty yijing probability figures on the net , so I decided to do some myself. I had been dabbling occasionally for years & thought it would be nice to bring all the figures together.
Have almost finished some birds-eye-view charts & since I know nothing about office I will send the figures to Hilary. Somebody might have a mind to do something with them.

Might be an interesting project if someone who knows Statistical analysis & sampling did some work on sample casts?

6789 There seems to be a coincidence between the line numbers & the first numbers produced in y. casting , depending on how many sticks are put aside.

For those new to yarrow casting , heres how :
50 sticks , one aside for duration of whole cast.
The working bundle is 49. Split the bundle.
If right handed, take one from bundle on right , & place between little finger & ring finger of left hand.
Count off left bundle in fours & place remainders 432 or 1 between ring & middle fingers left hand.
Same for bundle on right & place remainders between middle & index fingers of left hand.
The result is 9 or 5 remainders. Put these aside.
Repeat procedure with 44 or 40 sticks.Result is 8 or 4 sticks. Put these aside.
Repeat with 40 or 36 or 32 sticks. Result is 8 or 4.
You have now cast the 1st & bottom line of hexagram.
Start again with 49 to cast the 2nd line. Cast 6 lines to make a hexagram.
The lines will be one of following:
6 x 4 + remainders 988 (moving yin)
7 x 4 + 948 or 984 or 588 ( static yang)
8 x 4 + 944 or 584 or 548 (static yin)
9 x 4 + 544 (moving yang)

Regards.
