To assist my study of the Book of Change, I wrote the E-KING software in 2014 using a programming tool called PureBasic, and had an interesting synchronicity experience as related in a previous thread.

Synchronicity and the I Ching

The code was first developed on a Windows-based computer. Shortly after, with just a little extra effort to fine-tune E-KING for OSX, I was able to recompile and get it running on a Mini-MAC . Since the PureBasic package also includes a compiler for the Linux operating system , I could not resist having a go at porting E-KING to Linux as well. That proved to be too much of a hurdle for my novice Linux skill at the time, so it remained just another item on my wish list .

During a morning walk last year, I spotted a discarded computer by the roadside. Although it was covered in dirt and stains, I could still see a quality Dell machine, deserving a spot in my garage. So it came home with me. After a good clean-up, this Dell Inspiron showed no sign of life other than illuminated power-switch and running fan. Nevertheless, the computer hardware was of professional quality, invoking enough satisfaction by appearance alone , therefore it stayed wrapped up in my garage.

The coronavirus lockdown during the recent months has made me much more home-bound than usual. Among other consequences, it opened up an opportunity for me to unwrap the Dell Inspiron. Some more cleaning, more checking and unplugging/replugging of modules happened , and finally as if to reward my effort, the machine displayed a Dell BIOS screen . With the addition of a new battery for the CMOS-Ram and a hard disk, I got myself a fully functioning Dell Inspiron 530 . By the standard of today, this computer has quite old hardware (Dual-core E5200 CPU, and 2G Ram), so I started searching the internet for a light-weight Linux distribution . There are many options to choose from (too many, as a matter of fact), and after trying out a few , I settled on mX-Linux, as well as another interesting Ubuntu-based distribution with a very unlikely name of "Bionic-Dog" . Despite its name, the latter does not run like a dog at all, but actually flies effortlessly on the Dell Inspiron, being very compact (installed entirely on a USB stick, booted and copied to RAM, where it runs at top speed) .

Buoyed by the success of my hardware and OS experimentation, I decided to have another go at recompiling the E-KING program for Linux . This time I was lucky enough to find the necessary relevant tips from the PureBasic Users forum to have the compiler installed and working properly . More modifications had to be made to the E-KING code itself, and eventually I was able to recompile and see the program in action on a Linux-based machine.

Below are some screenshots of results produced by the E-KING program running under the Bionic-Dog Linux OS environment.

While preparing E-KING for Linux, I was also able to correct some typo and programming errors that went undetected in the previous revisions . So here are the new E-KING executables (version v3.6) for Linux , and for Windows operating systems . (The OSX version will have to wait until I get hold of a MAC machine !) .

You are cordially invited to try this free software which is a very useful tool for studying the Book of Change. Comments and feedback are welcome, and greatly appreciated.

:)

(PS. The download links for v3.6 have been removed . Please use the links for E-KING v3.7 given in the following post)

Compared to previous revisions, E-KING v3.6 has a number of improvements. But then again, the pesky flip side showed up: a new bug has crept in with the most recent changes, causing the program to skip saving user's readings after a restart . My humble apology !

Below are the download links for E-KING v3.7 which has the bug fix :

Here are also some more screenshots of the progression hexagrams pertaining to the reading shown in the last post . The Primary Hexagram 26 went through 3 transformation stages before finally reaching the Evolved Hexagram 3 .

The MAC-Mini that I used this week to re-compile the latest version of E-KING (v3.8) was on OSX-10.11 (El Capitan) . Soon afterwards there was a system reminder to upgrade the OS to version 10.15 (Catalina), so I put the machine through the upgrade process. Only then that I found out E-KING v3.8, being a 32-bit program, could not run on OSX-Catalina (a full 64-bit OS) . Therefore it was necessary for me to produce another instance of E-KING (v3.9) which is 64-bit, and is acceptable to OSX-Catalina.

Below are the download links for these E-KING Mac-OSX programs:

The latest versions of E-KING contain a feature where the user can reproduce the results for any pair of Primary Hexagram and Evolved Hexagram, obtained in some previous oracle consulting session. This feature is particularly useful when there are multiple moving lines involved. In these cases E-KING can provide further insight by presenting the progression of hexagrams as the moving lines change state gradually, one at a time .

For instance, we can take a look at a well-known example given by Carl Jung. Writing the foreword to Richard Wilhelm's Book of Changes, Jung had described how he asked I Ching for its judgement about his intention to help presenting and introducing the Book of Changes to the Western world. The response Jung obtained was hexagram 50 (The Cauldron), with moving lines leading to the evolved hexagram 55 (Progress) . Jung had analysed the symbols and the texts pertaining to these hexagrams in some length. Overall, he had thought the oracle paints a positive and optimistic outlook for his endeavour . A full description of how Jung had interpreted these results can be found here:

https://www.iging.com/intro/foreword.htm

By feeding this hexagram pair (50 and 55) into E-KING, it's possible to gain some more interesting insight into this particular experiment of Jung, with the emergence of a hexagram progression in three stages:

Jung's effort to help introduce the Book of Changes to the West has indeed proved to be very beneficial to a great many.

( I count myself among those who receive the benefits of his work)

Reading the foreword that Jung wrote for Wilhelm's book more carefully, it appears that there has been an error in print. The cast hexagram 50 (The Cauldron) was described as having two stressed (moving) lines: 2 and 3 . This would lead to the evolved hexagram 35 (TZIN, Progress) , not 55 as printed.

Feeding this new set of data (50 and 35) into E-KING yields the following results:

hex56.png

hex35a.png

The original Chinese text is very terse, and obscure . One would have to rely on many additional clues such as the pictorial shape of the hexagram symbol, its numerical order in the full set of 64 hexagrams, and the pre-assigned weight of importance for each of the six lines in order to make some sensible interpretation .

Translated literally, the Chinese commentary for hexagram 50 contains only four words:

Cauldron, wholesome good, favourable .

The lines have commentary which offers relatively more clues:

Line 2: The pot has food, some are envious of me, they can't get me,all is well .

Line 3: The pot handle deforms, stuck unable to move, cannot eat the pheasant fat, it's about to rain, no need to regret, all is well in the end.

Overall, it seems to me that every Yi-King hexagram is more or less like an encrusted curious-looking artifact extracted from an ancient mine. To determine its hidden nature, copious amount of sand and grit would have to be thrown at it, to grind it over and over until something would shine from its core . In the process, perhaps some inner mental or emotional tension may also be unblocked, stealthily bring subtle relief to all who participate in the quest .
