This is the continution of the discussion of Unchanging Hexagrams and our experiences with them, delineating each as a separate thread to make them easy to find in future. We move ahead here with Hexagram 6 Unchanging. Anybody coming upon these discussion is encouraged to add their thoughts and experiences at any point in the future.

There is a separate thread in Exploring Divination for general ideas on unchanging castings entitled "Your Experiences with Unchanging Castings Hexagram 0, so please enter anything that isn't specific to a particular unchanged hexagram over there.

I can offer a kick-off point for this unchanging hexagram with a simple story. [I don't have a story for all of them!]. In the middle of a work day, I was simply accosted by my boss with an uncharacteristic and loud complaint about my job performance that seemed to come from nowhere. I tried to relate to where the criticism was coming from and what I'd done wrong, but after some thought on the matter, was just shocked and hurt. She walked away with no explanation and there I was, fuming.

I felt so emotional about the incident I couldn't respond, not wanting to defend what seemed to have more to do with my boss's misperception of the work situation than anything else. At home later on I was so convinced the incident was fairly bizarre, that I cast the Yi, wanting to know what the attack on me was really about. And I cast Hexagram 6 Unchanging.

It seemed obvious: Conflict Unchanging. Outright conflict. And yet, conflict between us wasn't the essence of what had happened. She and I weren't in conflict; in fact we generally got on well and this incident was uniquely unprofessional on her part. I was just baffled by her, feeling what she said made no sense. The experience was of anger pouring onto me, and having no real chance to respond at all.

Then I realised that the casting meant the scene she'd made really had nothing to do with me -- it was something going on in my boss's life, within her. Inner Conflict of some kind. And that proved to be true. I eventually got a half-way apology for her verbal attack. She did have some changes she wanted to make in the department where I worked, but she was actually upset about a situation in her personal life. It wasn't entirely explained, except to say that the incident was precipitated by something upsetting her at just the wrong moment, and her inner conflict had overflowed onto me. Now when I see Hexagram 6 unchanging as a feature of life to come, I don't assume there will be a "fight" but that somewhere out there is an unpleasant situation and it will somehow overflow in my direction.

Concur with the two strong themes of an omg "out of the blue" event and resulting struggle to find a balance again for the "greater good."

Pretty straightforward.
At times when I get 6 i'm already frustrated so I ask another question. And i'm thinking in my head "OMG I know there's a conflict!!" Whyyyyyy must you taunt me? lol jk

I think hexagram 6 unchanging may sometimes denote perpetual indecision.

I've come to the conclusion many commentaries on hex 6 focus waaay too much on interpersonal conflict whereas infact I've found it doesn't really come up too much for that ...perhaps becasue conflict is generally about something and Yi often addresses where you are in relation to that something . Hex 6 might be all kinds of competition, questioning even, challenging, debate....even games.

If its about indecision the lines can tell you where you are...if its unchanging I do feel theres no easy solution to that indecision...it kind of sits there. Most recently I got 6 unchanging in asking of a decision to leave somewhere or not. I just didn't know what I felt. One part of me thought its best to stay, the other didn't. One thing for sure was there was no sign of interpersonal conflict anywhere in the situatiuon....at all.

I think of hex 6 unchanging as possibly long term stale mate, or do I mean check mate, like in chess. Well in chess check mate is the end, theres a winner so I think I mean stale mate, deadlock though it doesn't have to be so dead. I think with 6 unchanging you might learn to live with it and keep swapping your own POV or your own perspective.....its quite a livley kind of stalemate anyway...back and forth and back and forth

I can easily see couples living in 6 uc for years on end whilst never actually having a cross word...just always debating inwardly about whether its working and if they ought to move on...or not. And internally no sooner than justifying not moving on.....they see it from the opposite view that maybe they should break free. Actually that example is a bit of guess work ...but its just an example

Hex 6 uc feels sticky to me...perhaps one comes to terms with the fact there is no right answer in this matter and adjusts to that, lives with that. I think theres kind of pendulum effect...one might get used to that state of affairs

It occurs to me we should think of the trigrams here

water under heaven ? how would that manifest...or look

I'm not very good on trigrams but sometimes its very helpful especially with the unchanging hexagram

I know that the notion of wind over water helps me understand 59 much better

When I first started out with the Yi and was looking at 6, I thought of it like a bridge. The water is below and the heaven's are above, and you are suspended on the bridge in between. The picture is attached of a silly collage I did regarding 6 and posted it in a Thread called "Graphic Yi images". I pasted "The Thinker"by Rodin at the entrance of the bridge. He was symbolizing the "considering what to do" aspect, but I think if I re did the picture, I might put the person directly on the bridge. Anyways, it is just my take on the trigrams of 6.

I checked out your link to your own picture AQ. I think it captures 6...just look at the expression of the statue....thats pure 6. To me that epitomizes how 6 feels. I think its 'the thinker' but he looks like hes troubled to me !

Hmmm the bridge is an interesting idea

To cross or not to cross
Is it better over there than here ? Looks hazardous !

Ooohh the torture of indecision

I guess in hex 5 one may relax while waiting as if there werenothign else to do

In 6 one keeps jumping up and down to check out which decision is best. In a sense its a kind of waiting...if you turn waiting upside down, well hex 6 is hex 5 upside down

In 6 unchanging one could be forever standing in the middle of that bridge, at one end or the other of the bridge but not wanting toleave the possibilites of the bridge .....perhaps ?

Brilliant idea Trojan -- perpetual indecision. That actually fits very well a lot of situation I remember thinking -- well it's not REALLY a conflict -- we just can't agree. HAHAHAHA.

To me though the underlying idea isn't waiting -- it's tension. There's a tension that just persists and you can't solve it -- whether it's the standoff thing, or the fact that the "conflict" isn't in you but in someone else.

By the way, I'm not scientist but I think the atmosphere over water is what creates barometric pressure? Like Goethe's barometer that predicted storms.

As I understand it, the tension between these two elements more or less propells a lot of the climate -- eg. the jet stream of the Atlantic Ocean.

I'm not the weather girl or something, but this is what I remember from studying this about age 12.

Yes but doesn't tension generally have an element of waiting to it...tension exists because of suspension of decisive action one way or the other. If I think of any situation of tension it is because something is undecided, not agreed...and as such sort of exists in a state of suspended animation

True, true. The only other thing about this type of tension is that I somehow know -- I'm waiting forever, or I'll be waiting many, many successive occasions without resolution. This isn't going to change for some reason. Like my crabby boss story at the beginning of the thread. She never changed and there was always the possibility she'd be internally off balance some morning and blow sky-high again. So it was like living at the base of Mt. Vesuvius. It was always going to erupt another time, you just don't know WHEN. I suppose that the WHEN and uncertainty about that is, as you say, the element of waiting. Not like hexgram 5 at all -- no pleasant element here. Just awaiting the inevitable revisitation of something unpleasant.

Hex 6 is scalable I think, and on the small level "tension" a very apt description. Thinking like creative tension, without tension a string doesn't make music, the Hegelian process, Thesis - Antithesis - synthesis.

The only rub is the "trust is stopped" part. Maybe in the middle of the creative process, one is focusing on one's own thoughts and creative ideas - thus the "needs to be cautious in the middle." But in the end for anything to actually happen, a decision has to be made, so "seeing the great man" is important. Bands function better when they have leaders to resolve conflicts, Democracies with everyone in charge require everyone to be "The Great Man" in themselves.

Maybe 6 is already on the bridge. Waiting(5) is over, you are on it. You are in the conflict. Surrounded by a "one or the other" mindset that is bouncing back and forth. The tension of the suspension (bridge). The tension of not knowing where things will end up. Once you understand their is a side to choose, you can get off the bridge by seeing what happens. You realize once the conflict ends and you formulate what was right and what was wrong - 7. But you didn't know at the time. It had to play out naturally for you to see.

'Arguing/Conflict - Conflict, conflicting, two things not in agreement, against grains or splitting apart.
With truth and confidence, blocked.
Cautious and centred, good fortune. Completing, pitfall.
- Understand you are in the conflict, do not fight it, do not step off the track, stay in the middle, let things bounce around you in conflict, have confidence it will end, stay cautious,
Harvest in seeing great people.
No harvest in crossing the great river.' - Don't pick a side. Do not act, there is no were to go.

06 Compromising
In a context of containment we utilise singlemindedness.

"... we need to maintain balance by avoiding going beyond the half way point - meet them in the middle."

"The trigram of Water reflects Consumption. The trigram of Heaven reflects Exchange (through competition, opposition). This relationship reflects competitive exchange in a context of consumption in the form of legal actions and so a focus on compromise."

I got 6 (but not unchanging) a few times about a situation like this. It will never end, but stay part of my life. Hex.6 did give me some directions about how to deal with it. Not give in, not fight, just stay strong.

I think the water below is about finding a form for something. The danger of what is still formless, the abyss of its uncertainty, but also the possibility to find a space you can live in. Heaven has a lot to do with laws and timing and strength. So you have to be correct, react always timely, and stay strong. Which is what I try to be and do.

I was just called to this thread to delete a spam post. It's a nice example of 6 unchanging, complete with hindsight. The gist: he couldn't see anything wrong with the house he planned on buying, and indeed there wasn't - it was just that his wife and son didn't like it at all.

Just received this yesterday when I was asking about working with a particular herbalist for my health needs. I felt like it was about being torn in my own head about the direction to take this. There is some indecision on my part as well as a lack of trust. Kind of a "both/and" experience. I also feel like this is Yi's way of saying to me "what ever you decide." I tend to argue a lot in my own head. ;)

Little update here...
I had tried multiple times to contact this herbalist but she would not contact me back. I strarted to come up with assumptions about how she probably did not want to work with me, etc.
She contacted me about a week ago- 2 months after I initially tried to see her. She had been in a bad accident and was just now getting back to work.
I think this was the most accurate in this situation:
Like a weather report. Today strong wind. That I get blown off my feet has nothing to do with me, it is just the wind...

Because hexagram 1 is Creating, I often get value from considering how hex.1 changes into the hexagram I am considering - for example, how do we get from Creating to Conflict, how do we 1.Create 6. Conflict?
Hex. 1 changes to hex.6 by way of of 1.1 and 1.3. These lines describe a time when one should not act, and then a man acting all day and worrying all night..this leads to Conflict.

I also zero in on Wilhelm's words, "If rights and duties are clear at the beginning the cause for Conflict is removed" (or something like that - don't have the book in front of me) So when ever I see Conflict I ask, "Just what rights and duties have I agreed to here?" When there is a Conflict and you trace things back to What was our agreement? you often find there is some misunderstanding as to what was originally agreed to and not only that, when you realize on an inner level you did not agree to something it often evaporates in the outer world.

Without 1 there is no 6 and without 6 there is no 1. Creation is a result of duality, which is a result of creation.

On the other hand, Kim (forgive my gemini duality), might not there be a conflict between the herbs, literally?

Sorry I just saw this...
A little more development on this one. I finally reached the herbalist- she requested that I get my blood drawn- I did she was incorrect about her dianoses.
I knew it as I was talking to her that was she was saying was not right. I did not listen to myself. I think that was the conflict.
