Once I noticed and have been testing that from then onward that a psychological state, a mood of a person who does a cast impacts the cast itself. In short: the worse your psychological state, the less your satisfaction with a cast/the worse your cast.

It's better to do a cast when you are calm and tranquil, not longing for something. If you feel stressed, devastated or worn out by waiting for something or phrenetic aspiration, you'd better refrain from casting.

Did you notice such an interdependence? Thanks friends.

No I don't agree frame of mind matters for casting though it can certainly matter for interpreting. That is when one is already very anxious or sad that will colour how the answer is seen by you. Therefore I would advise not from refraining to cast the I Ching at emotional extremes,( the clearest answers can come at this time since the whole self is sincere in wanting to know) but from refraining from a too hasty a interpretation. Your expectations don't colour the answer but they do colour the interpretation sometimes. Ever had the experience of being angry or disappointed at an answer and then next day realised it didn't mean what you thought it meant at all ? It's a good exercise to look back over old readings to see where you misinterpreted due to your frame of mind at the time.

Here's an example of mine from when I was very young, before Clarity, when I had no one to ask about my reading. I felt hopeless and alone one day and consulted in a desperate kind of a way about whether things would ever change (with all the drama, passion and 'woe is me' of the teenager). I got 47.1>58 and took it as saying no things would never get better and I would always be sitting under this bare tree in this gloomy valley. It is quite comical looking back at how much to heart I took this. I went for a walk thinking my life was doomed. But of course imagining your life is doomed and nothing will ever come right is precisely the kind of thinking 47.1 warns against. Of course partly my misunderstanding was to do with having no useful commentaries to refer to but also I was already in the mindset where I was going to interpret all kinds of answers as confirming my idea that something was terribly wrong.

I have seen this here in Shared Readings many times how a person's mindset really impinges on their interpretation.

For casting what matters more than anything is sincerity and the true wish to know and understand. These are when the clearest answers come, when we are fully invested and open to receive help. After all does a friend stop answering you when you are upset ? No they don't but if you are upset you might misinterpret the advice they offer. In such a case it is always better to leave the reading for a day or so and come back to it when you are less upset to see if there are aspects of the answer you have missed.

Trying to make yourself calm to consult is not really necessary and although it helps to have a clear question one can simply go to the I Ching and say "I'm upset counsel me" and that works very well too.

Because sincerity is so important in consulting trying to foster contrived states of calm and detachment are really counterproductive when they are false. You don't only have to bring your nice calm self to the I Ching you can bring all parts of yourself to it. Then your whole presence can make a much deeper connection with the Oracle.

Interesting. I can fully agree with this:

Because sincerity is so important in consulting trying to foster contrived states of calm and detachment are really counterproductive when they are false. You don't only have to bring your nice calm self to the I Ching you can bring all parts of yourself to it. Then your whole presence can make a much deeper connection with the Oracle.

Calmness of mind and sincerity go without saying.

My personal mistake while interpreting casts was that I perceived readings too much to heart, too, and like it all was cast in bronze (a word-play :) ). I did not realize that everything changes.

I would also add that having done a cast, it's better to forget about it for a while. Especially when your interpretation is promising. As for me, I often started waiting for that to come true with redoubled energy. Sometimes it fagged me out a lot, and I repeated the same question. Here is the real cast:

- Will X invite me?
- 42.4.5
- Hurrah!
(Waiting for a few months. No invitation from X.)
- Will X invite me?
- 58.5

X has not invited me yet. And I suppose he will ever not :)

My experience has been that the emotional state does have an influence. It doesn't seem to determine the whole answer but it definitely seems to be a piece of the puzzle. For example if I'm overly optimistic and get "ten tortoise shells cannot deny your good fortune!!!" it will turn out to be a mirroring of my state rather than an objective evaluation of the situation. Almost like the IC is saying, "Do you think things are really this good?"
Actually my experience has been I never know what exactly the IC is going to respond to. Sometimes it may be a straight answer to the question, sometimes it will be a hint, sometimes it will be a reference to my emotional state. You never know what you are going to get...

I do think the more involved I am in the situation, the more I know about it, the clearer the answers are. Or if I have been spending time studying the IC the answers seem more clear.

Well sometimes the answer is answering that emotional state the question was asked in. Like if you ask about something when angry at times the answer might address the anger. But I don't think it's necessary to reach a level of induced calm to consult. I don't think, nor have I ever found, that questions asked when distressed are less well or clearly answered by Yi than questions asked when feeling more detached.

For me the important thing to consider at the moment of casting a reading is what is it I'm really wanting to know? The clearer the question the clearer the answer.

I believe emotional state does not matter for casting (as the act of getting the lines) but is extremely relevant for interpreting.

Since the I Ching cannot predict the future (but can advice on how to make real the future that is in line with your aspirations) I would read the question you got as:

- Will X invite me?
- 42.4.5 ->> In order to do so you have to accomplish something (cross the great water). If you are being truthful, you relate correctly to the right peoplE and provide your support in important matters (moving lines) it will yeld to a positive outcome.

(Waiting for a few months. No invitation from X.)
- Will X invite me?
- 58.5 ->> You can still get positive outcome but you should rely on something "concrete", being passive (or even worse, being negative) will not bring any good.

Of course I know nothing about the specific circumstances of the question and I could be completely off track.

However, if you interpreted the first answer through your emotional state (say a mix of hope and anticipation) you might have read it as a "yes". If you interpreted the second answer in a state of worry and convincement that he would not have invited you anymore, you could have read it as a "no".

Since the I Ching will never give you a plain yes/no answer, i believe it is worthwhile to be conscious of your emotional state so that you can filter your reading through it. This way you might get a better understanding of the overall situation and being able to act accordingly.

Trying to forcibly induce a state of "calmness" before asking seems, to me, that it would make more harm than good. I prefer to be myself when asking. I mean: the "myself" that is worrried about this and that, that is angry, etc, etc. This way it seems I can get more clear responses.

I did not imply inducing calmness by force at all. I meant those moments when our inner pendulum swings smoothly - no intensity of emotions, and you see your inner self plainly, more or less.

Hi, I 've noticed that when I'm in a calm, uplifted mood, -- and I pose a question in that state -- I seem to receive answers that intuitively resound, better, for me. So there may be something to that.

Every time I get a 47, it is about this.
Mirroring my mind state, and telling me how to get over it.

Yes, mood does impact on readings but I think that's because the Yi is infinitely concerned for our state of mind, equilibrium and spiritual/personal development. So if I am in the 'wrong' frame of mind, I find the Yi comments on that. But that's not the same as the reading being skewed because of our frame of mind. I hope that makes sense.

For instance, if I am in a very negative or unhelpful frame of mind, the Yi knows that and tells me so - so anything I hope for will not come to pass while I'm in such a fuggish state. If I'm equilibrious and detached, the Yi often reflects that too, with a more positive reading - because my state of mind is really important to my development, and to the outcome of my enquiry! If I am attached to negative outcomes then the Yi tells me so. One's state of mind impacts (even creates) one's reality so the Yi has to take it into account!

"Good" or "Bad" mood doesn't seem to make a difference. Level of concentration does. "Sincerity," I guess IC would say. If I'm not sincere, sometimes I'll be chastised, sometimes humored, sometimes ignored.

The clearest indication that synchronicity has not been able to work through the IC is when I get a blindingly clear answer through some other sort of coincidence. For example, recently I was struggling with something and asked a "How do I..." question. Could not make any sense of the answer. I even forget what the reading was right now. What I remember is that I was kind of reluctant to ask the question because I was feeling tired and distrustful. I just did it anyway because it seemed like a good way to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Persevere. Later I realized that what I really wanted to do was just stop, that I already knew that, didn't want to know it, and that inquiring was a way of avoiding that truth. How did I realize that? Within 24 hours I found myself in a 2 1/2 hour traffic jam. About an hour into it, looking at the same bush on the side of the road and watching other folks get out of their cars and start to walk around I went, "Duh! Just stop. Ok, Ok, I admit that's what I need to do. Thank you Universe."
