I'm wondering about when you get both lines 1 and 6 in a reading, thinking specifically about 49.1.6, but I'm guessing could apply in any hex.

The two lines represent both beginning and end, so what happens in between? If you get these two lines, it seems it's too early and also too late. The situation is both not yet ready, but also it's finished.

How do you interpret when you have those two lines?

1, and oh by the way, consider 6. Or sometimes 1 now, but 6 when it's time. Like the old Chinese sage: Ti Ming.

60 lines 1 and 2 is another good example of this. Rest and movement complimenting each other. Not in conflict when considered as part of the whole.

Just a thought-
It might be as good a time as any to look at the Hu Gua & Hu Ti (Nuclear Hexagrams & Trigrams). These will stay when 1 & 6 change.
Of the two, analysis by Nuclear Trigrams is older, by many centuries.

Lines 1 and 6 can be beginning and end.. but they can just as well have very different meanings. I collected all those meanings: see http://www.anton-heyboer.org/i_ching/structures/ and probably there are even more than these.

Wilhelm (or probably his teacher Lao) says, lines 1 and 6 are ?outside the situation?. When you look at the places of the lines in hexagram and trigram, all lines have two qualities of earth, man or heaven. In the trigram the lines are earth-man-heaven from bottom up, in the hexagram earth-earth-man-man-heaven-heaven.
When you write that down, you will see that every line except the bottom and top line have once ?man?, either from the trigram or from the hexagram. So the central four lines have to do with human affairs. They are the ones which form the nuclear hexagram.
The bottom line is earth-earth, and the top line is heaven-heaven. Pure earth, and pure heaven. The bottom line is tangible, matter, reality. The top line is spirit, spiritual, intangible, immaterial. They are the lines which are most difficult to act upon.

The bottom line can mean that there is nothing tangible as yet, you have to create it, or wait until it appears. Or maybe it is the first step you set on the virgin soil of a land, idea, hope. The top line: only the spirit is left, it may be an idea, a love, an experience, what will you keep from it in your mind? Only its vibration is left - will it get lost or can you turn it in an image which might live on long after it happened? Passing on wisdom, motivation, or any other intangible value.

In matters of time, it can also be reversed, the top line being an idea, before it manifests in reality, and the bottom line when it has turned into reality.

This is just an example, every situation is different.

The positions of 1 and 6 reflect the expression of 27 through a hexagram - since 27 deals with the raw structure prior to 'filling' so changing these lines in a hexagram gives you a description of the raw structure of that hexagram.

E.g. 27-ness of 01 is 28 - too much yang; 27-ness of 36 is 52 - blockage/discernment; 27-ness of 48 is 09 - small gains serve as a foundation etc etc

Since we are dealing with line positions vs line changes, noting that to extract the meaning of a position for a hexagram we have to change the lines, so there is some relationship overall to 27.

If we break this down to individual line positions, 6 is 'ruled' by 23; 1 is 'ruled' by 24.. so 27 blends properties of 23 and 24.

24 covers the beginning of something and/or return to something previously explored etc.

23 deals with housekeeping, bringing out the 'quality' faith over all others.

27 covers (a) the 'new' the 'raw' beginnings and (b) comes with a warning about quality control. IOW we see the link of hexagrams and trigrams to feed into another hexagram as 'meaning'... and so validate the expression of 27 THROUGH all other hexagrams (27 of 23 is 24, 27 of 24 is 23 etc etc)

the 'genetic code' of hexagrams is derived from the XOR process applied to line positions where 1s become 0s, 0s becomes 1s as we use one hexagram and "XOR" to draw out its expression through another hexagram.

Is the divination process in fact derived from these patterns encoded in all hexagrams as a result of the METHOD used to create them?

TO make the point, line 6 is 'about' the universal qualities covered in hexagram 23. Line 1 is 'about' the universal qualities covered in hexagram 24.

As such there is no 'inbetween' UNLESS you interpret the lines as a sequence of 6 rather than of 64 qualities compressed into their expression through 6 lines.

The association of line position 6 with the 'sage' reflects the qualities of 23. In the full range of the hexagram, the top line is not the end, it is the middle, the peak of a wave form moving from the hexagram to its opposite (expressed as all lines 'changing')

As such, the peak is interpretable as the 'end' if you like but there is a lot more ;-)

Thus 49.1.6, once CHANGED give us the expression of 27 through 49, and so its skeletal form - 33

33 deals with enticement in a context of being competitive; to draw in the enemy, to suddenly 'reveal' things - "from/with blockage comes singlemindedness" - that in 49 is refined into "from/with guidance comes intensity in expression" with it its strong focus on revelation etc and associated actions (e.g. revealing corruption as an act to revolution etc)

The question then is does the divination focus bring out the line position meanings that are then interpreted not as PARTS but as a transition from 49.1.6 to 33, IOW an AND state, a sequence?

In principle, as 'changing lines' so 49.1.6 represents a dodecagram expressed through a hexagram - IOW there is no 'change' involved, we are just working at a lower degree of resolution of meaning and using that to map time.

The traditional perspective IS focused on 6 lines and AND states rather than compression of 64 into 6 and the extraction of their meanings through XOR processes... but understanding the XOR/AND dynamics so we need to review what we are dealing with as a universal.
