Politics heating up in the USA with presidential race coming next year. Candidates are coming out of the woodwork from many directions. I asked:

Will XXX become President? I actually used the candidate's name but don't want to mention it here where it might influence others' readings.

I'm reading 7.5.6 as a very positive indication that XXX will be elected.

7: The Army indicates a strong leader. Auspicious, without fault.

7.5 According to LiSe: "There is game in the fields. Harvest: catching it. Words. Without fault. The eldest son leads the legion, the younger brother carts the corpse. Determination pitfall.
Do not act rigid, take chances when they appear, do not depend too much on rules, stay versatile. Learn to delegate, do what you're good at."

Might indicate a candidate that's going to have skirmishes and should stay on the beam. Could be any of them. Carting the corpse sounds like rather a landslide.

7.6: The great prince has the mandate to found a state and inherit the house. Small people should not be employed.
The things you accomplish have the same value you have yourself. If you are great, you can accomplish great things, if you are small, you achieve only small things.

During the election silly season, all candidates point to their own greatness. But is XXX's alleged greatness going to persuade the electorate? Does it point to a win?

Hexagram 59

HUÀN
The Flood

Gua Poem:
Dispersion, expansion
The king serves the temple
Harvest: wading the great river
Harvest: determination

The great image says:
Winds blowing over the waters: flood
The ancient kings presented offerings to the Lord and established temples

A flood destroys all the old structures, paving the way for a new, fresh and as yet clean life, open for new possibilities.
For a life with an open gateway to the cosmos, man’s mind needs deluges. Dissolving all the rigid structures, like opinions, prejudices, ties, obligations. They all give a feeling of security, but they restrict, narrow down, reduce, and take away the essential deep security of universal openness.
Having to save one’s life puts many other things back in the place where they belong, often even completely out of sight

The Pathfinder, which combines The I Ching, Tao of Power, and Art of War, all of which seem apropos to this question, describes 59 as "Flow." http://www.3rdmilieux.com/pathfinder.html

A favorable time for travel, and consultation with the powerful. The flow at this time overcomes obstacles, uncovers corruption, and reunites parties and elements previously separated. Don't be afraid of acting spontaneously now. In cases of crisis where prolonged conflict may mean disaster for all, flexibility in tactics is essential for optimizing the effectiveness of your forces. Delegate authority to competent lieutenants in the field, and allow them free rein to respond to the flow of battle with their best efforts. In this way few opportunities for advancement will escape you, and the enemy will find your reaction time to events too rapid to overcome in most instances.

IMHO, Hexagram 59, whether the outcome or the matrix of this question, sounds very favorable for XXX. But I do admit to a degree of prejudice.

How do you interpret 7.5.6.< 59?

It will be fun to come back to this as the season goes on and nominees are selected.

7.5.6 > 59

The candidate with the best organization wins a place in history. XXX (triple run distillate) is the tops and auspicious. I like Bobby Jindal.

Hey, Moss Elk, this is exactly why I didn't put a name of candidate in.

How do you read 7.5.6 > 59?

Thanks, pocossin. "tops and auspicious" sounds promising. We'll see how it works out.

I think 61 views and 4 responses, now 5, demonstrates the way cognitive bias interferes with ones objective thinking regarding Yijing reading interpretation. Interpretations rely upon the subjective views of each interpreter, rather than simply interpreting the reading as it stands. Why risk it?

I'm seeing a candidate with strong leadership skills and strong advocacy backing, whose strong beginning will dissipate in the end, either because his or her ideas or approach appear too forward, or due to higher power manipulation, or possibly even assassination. In any case, he or she will not win the election, despite his or her qualification.

I think you're right about all of this, but hopefully not the assassination part.

I wonder whether people would be more inclined to post to this thread if I gave a choice of candidates. So I did a casting for candidate xx.

WILL XX Be President?

Hexagram 2.1.3.4 > 55

Looks pretty good, yes? Does XX look more promising than XXX?

Not a leader, a follower, a "yes man or woman", who is approaching the end of his or her life - politically or literally. He or she will be so overwhelmed or overplayed (burned out) as to be rendered ineffective and unconvincing. No chance.

Maybe he's looking good now (or will in spring), but come autumn his rating will dissipate (59).
There are problems with his outmoded ideas and prejudice (7.5).
Richmond : A difficult situation arises as we become less aware that our intuition is not active so that our present reading of our situation is governed solely by rules we learned in the past.

And 29.6 just puts the final nail in the coffin.
Wilhelm:
Bound with cords and ropes, shut in between thorn-hedged prison walls:
For three years one does not find the way. Misfortune.

A man who in the extremity of danger has lost the right way and is irremediably entangled in his sins has no prospect of escape. He is like a criminal who sits shackled behind thorn hedged prison walls.

By combining the hexes names: His control of the army dissipates.

Unstable person, unstable rating going up and down. But then he hits a very low spot and quits the race (36.4, 2.4).

Wilhelm 36.4:
We realize that there is no longer any hope of improvement, and thus we are enabled to leave the scene of disaster before the storm breaks.

There maybe an opportunity for him to join the office as a hidden general, someone lower in rank but still up high in the chain of command (2.3).

Very interesting reading. Thanks so much, ash. Too bad we have to wait so long to find out what happens to candidate XXX. Probably nothing as dire as "irremediably entangled in sins with no prospect of escape," but that's the advantage of a long election season. Things will be revealed.

I'll post a follow up when things irl become clear.

Storms will definitely break

...no longer any hope of improvement, and thus we are enabled to leave the scene of disaster before the storm breaks.

I wouldn't have guessed "unstable" about this candidate, so this will be very interesting to watch. Maybe health issues? Not someone I would vote for, btw, just one of the many candidates with a chance to win. So far. As the season gets rolling, investigations will be done, misdeeds and missteps will surface, deals will be made….A rather filthy process.

If I had a tagline, it would read: "One cannot be too cynical about politics." But it's fascinating as can be.

Thanks for playing,, ash:)

Unstable comes from 24.3, 'repeated return'.

Daniels: You are finding it hard to make up your mind.

Legge: Shows one who has made repeated returns. The position is perilous, but there will be no error.

Richmond: Many returns. Danger. No error.

Wilhelm:
There are people of a certain inner instability who feel a constant urge to reverse themselves. There is danger in continually deserting the good because of uncontrolled desires, then turning back to it again because of a better resolution.

p.s. I wanted to post the day before, but somehow it didn't happen.
After reading your question I went to the bathroom, thinking about 7.5.6 and then then I just asked the universe directly, 'please show me the image of the winner'. I saw woman's face, but not Clinton.
I've looked up candidates online yesterday after posting my view on the casting. There was only one besides Clinton, so maybe it's her - Fiorina.

Subjectively speaking, Carly is on my short list of candidates to get my vote. Interesting insight there, Ashteroid. Wonder what reading Poised would receive for her? My only reason for doubting would be her lack of political experience, though her business experience may be exactly what this country needs.

Maybe 14, 15 or 26, possibly 4 to reflect her youth in politics.

That would be quite a stretch. At this point, she doesn't have enough support, according to the polls, to even be part of the debate. She has many strengths, so who knows?

Long-shot candidate not so long today

After the debates Thursday night, Fiorina, who was at the bottom of the list in terms of voters who liked her, unexpectedly turned in a very good performance and is gaining admirers among voters and, more impressively, with the press. Here's just one of many articles……with many photos. Does she look like the woman you saw, ash?

I haven't cast a hexagram for her, and don't intend to unless she rises further toward the top. Perhaps not even then, as I don't want to get into political discussions here, just hexagram analysis and interpretation. But your comment was psychic, not political, so maybe you can tell me whether this is the woman you saw:

@poised, you know the 2nd photo, where she is standing among men, is very very close. Her hair seems darker and the face not so .. how to say it .. long/high vertically. And she is looking to the right, like I saw.

The candidate will need to take some difficult decisions about their staff in order to succeed, place someone of experience at the head of the staff and hire specialists. Separation means that some people will need to leave.

The outcome won't necessarily be a success at the election but the candidate may gain something useful out of this if the campaign is done the right way.

7 - The will

To solve their problems, one will need discipline and continuity.

5 - Something useful can be obtained, the most experienced will be able to do it, another would damage it.

6 - It is time to re-establish order after action, and for that one will need specialists.
In the making
59 - Separation

One endures separation without opposing it by force.

Thanks, taoscopy. In the days since I posted this thread, your comment has become a reality.

I am not personally invested in any candidate; none represents all of my important issues. But I am fascinated by the messy process, which is exactly how democracy works -- when it works.

Here we are, election night. My two candidates in question are still standing, returns not entirely in. Looks like either might win. My original interpretation was that XXX looked like a stronger candidate than XX.

Care to make an educated guess, anyone? I have a strong preference, so don't trust my own interpretation.

Also, how far ahead does the ICHING work?

Candidate xxx won the election

As it worked out, candidate XXX, Donald Trump is President elect, and candidate XX, Hillary Clinton, is not.

When I threw the coins 15 months ago, I started with Trump because when I first saw him announce that he was seeking the Republican nomination, I saw him taking the oath of office on the Capitol steps surrounded by his family, an image that never left my mind's eye. Seemed improbable, as he was neither a Republican nor a politician.

Later, I thought I should include the obvious Democrat nominee, Hillary.

I read my original toss as a Trump win. But wanted to ask more expert IChingists for their interpretains as well.

the other part of this experiment was seeing how far ahead one can ask a question about a topic that will be precisely answered in the future, in this case, Election Day 2016.

All thoughts appreciated

Taoscopy, you reoly, imo, comes closest to the way things worked out. Trump had a YUGE staff shakeout, hired extraordinarily shrewd political pros, and got the win because of it.

Hi, interesting enough I also had hex 7 line 6 for Trump when I did a reading that pointed out that he would win the American presidency. I did a set of readings exploring different angles, getting both Trump and Clinton in perspective. So I didn't get hex 7.6 in isolation but it was already a strong indication (line 6 representing a ruler/commander/prince, all figures of power in charge of a new order after a war is won).

My readings were a few days before the elections, yours months before, so it looks like time was not relevant, at least on this case.

Looks like I failed to understand Yi's message about Trump (7.5.6).
So 7.5 was saying reorganize staff/defeat opponents. Plain and simple - 'catch the birds'.
No need to delve deep into commentary. Man did I get it wrong ..

and 7.6 so simple, again - 'Shows the great ruler delivering his charges', appointing staff/ministers and etc. A clear depiction of becoming president.
Transitional method misled me completely. Can't see how 29.6 applies here..

Note to self: just read the lines, preferably the first part, without fortune/misfortune/evil part.

p.s. Well, the far-fetched idea about 29.6 could be that he gets stuck with being a president for 3 years at least, whether he likes it or not.
