There is a yogic tradition that there are really only 3 chakras, we percieve 6 (or 7- the 7th, however may be understood as the axis central to them all) because of a distortion of our senses, perhaps inate. by this tradition there exits in actuality only 3 aspects of reality with which humanity can interact: the material, the abstract-symbolic (which though derived from the material exists seperately from it) and the human which bridges those two spheres. the trigrams may be understood in light of this. the lines of the lower trigram, corresponding to the material realm tend to evince a duality of referants, which illustrate the possibilities of humans in the real world as individuals with social and physical histories, wheras the lines of the upper trigram refering to the same contingincies tend to be more unified, as they deal with conceptions of those roles.
The 1st line encompasses both habitual action and sexual influence, the 2nd line pertains to matters of will and food supply, the 3rd to both potential energies and sociality. the lines of the upper trigram correspond to the intellectual or spiritual equivalents of these properties. they function as unifiers of the dualities found in the lower trigram, and do this by accessing the alternate time or moral frameworks available through abstraction. there is no better example of this process than the 28th hexagram.
thus 28.1 can be seen as refering to the planting and harvesting of bamboo shoots, of humility before man's role of interloper in natural cycles, and the way of woman preparing for sexual congress (or any serious matter) by way of 'dignifying the small'
(bamboo shoots are also a fortifying food for young children); while 28.4 refers to the crop
of strong bamboo to be, the strong children who'll be in turn support for their parents, and the good sex life of the upward curving beam blossoming into love.
the 3rd line refers to lost individual power, and the social mechanisms of dealing with 'weak links', while the sixth line embraces a unifying philosophy of personal and social courage.
an examination of the correspondance between the 2nd and 5th lines in this hexagram seems to me to be integral to understanding the worldview the writers of the book of changes hoped to bring about. i dont feel it was a sexist one although gender roles were forcefully delimned, this was perhaps more a matter of long convention; it seems likely to me that line 2 pertains to soil erosion, and the pioneering of new lands, wheras line 5 refers to social erosion and the governance of establihed areas; the need for both stability and personal power(line 2) is posed against the simple personelle-dependance of enterprise (line 5).
