63.5 Less is More

Actually did you want to work through from the beginning starting at 1.1 then everyone could add theirs in as we go or do you just want it to be random ?

I think a thread where we could add our little penny-worth would be very valuable. I can think of a few. I remember there being something a while ago, but it didnt continue. I think it would be good as a sticky in the memorizing threads bit - it would actually help remember lines.

To be more helpful to future readers I thought it might be good to start at 1.1, everyone throw in their ideas, then go on to 1.2 and so on just because if it's a sticky then someone wanting to see proverbs for for any line will be able to find it more easily. But if you think that would reduce spontaneity then maybe not ?

This is a great idea -- though I'm still tired from my Beatlemania -- restless nights, drumming up songs, matching them to changing lines.
Yes, if you allow the ideas to pop up in any old order, then later you can go through and organize the list, sequentially.

Many IC insights are mirrored in familiar sayings. Can we find a well known proverb, phrase or expression for each of the hexagrams? Oh, and multiple sayings for the same line are welcome!

Sayings like these have come to mind many times and I've always wanted to put something together like this. Thank you! I'll add as I review my notes.

7.3 The inmates are running the prison

I think 'a stich in time saves nine' is quite 45ish....preparing one's weapons in order to be ready for the unforeseen.

I thought of the saying "There's no smoke without fire" and wondered what that might be but then I thought a proverb is no use unless it's true and this isn't true at all. An example springs to mind is what just happened to Cliff Richard. There was a lot of smoke but he didn't do anything wrong. Smoke can be manufactured for all kinds of purposes. I'd say the untruth of this proverb is 16ish. There can be smoke with not a fire in sight.

An obvious one I just thought of is "The early bird catches the worm". Has to be hexagram 8 doesn't it ?

"He who dares wins" is either hexagram 1 or hexagram 34 but it sounds kind of heroic and superman like so that feels more like hexagram 1.

I think any proverb could have numerous hexagramish links so I don't think we can stick to one line per proverb. For example he who dares wins is quite 10.5 too.

Let's party and throw as many hexagrams at a proverb as we like

I just googled "A stitch in time saves nine" to be clear on the exact meaning. Turns out we didn't have it quite right. It's not about being prepared, it's about mending a small rip/problem in time before it becomes a major one. So I don't think it fits hex 6 or 45 But I think it works for 6.1.

Surely mending a small problem in time is preparing against later potential problems.

"We didn't have it quite right" ? Er I do know 'what ' a stich in time saves nine' means. I mean it's simple. If you repair something before the damage is too far gone you will save yourself time and money in the long run. If you just leave a small problem and don't fix it then it can turn into a bigger more expensive one later. Like if I ignore that rattle in my car today it may lead to further damage to the engine if I go on driving. So if I take it to the garage today and get it fixed I might save myself a lot of money. This fits with 45 to a degree. You gather and protect your assets.

Wilhelm
"The image of Gathering Together.
Thus the superior man renews his weapons
In order to meet the unforeseen"

This proverb doesn't fit 6.1 at all as far as I can see . How do you get to that idea ? 6.1 is about letting a contention go, letting it drop before becomes something it needn't. 6.1 is not about repairing something but just letting something drop. Can't see that this proverb has anything much to do with hexagram 6 at all so no idea how you came to that either.

The thing is no proverb will exactly fit any hexagram because they are short and limited in meaning whereas hexagrams and lines carry a multitude of meanings.

So in some ways this is a reductive exercise, trying to boil down something vast and rich with an infinity of meaning to short pithy proverbs. Fun to try and think of what might go with what but somehow I don't think it's a good idea to aim to come to a consensus on which proverb fits what hexagram, I don't think there will be a 'right' one for each proverb since we have quite different ideas about hexagrams and apparently about the meaning of simple childhood proverbs.

But as far as I am concerned this proverb fits 45 far better than either 6 or 6.1. You could say there was an hexagram 18 element here too but hexagram 6 ?

Talking of 6.1 .....this is a game so no need to carry the contention very far.;)....but I do know the meaning of this proverb and do think 45 fits it to a degree although of course it cannot possibly encapsulate the full meaning of 45.

Well no problem, if you like Stitch for 45. I can put it there. I thought it worked for 6 because of the image about rights and duties being agreed to in advance preventing problems later on. However after reading google's explanation which pointed out that "a stitch in time" means a small timely repair prevents having to make larger repairs later on l decided to keep looking because the image for 6 describes problems being prevented before there is even the need for one stitch. Maybe it would fit for 18.1.

Anyone have a suggestion for 6.4?

Turn the other cheek?

Or

Return kindness for hate. (“Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.”)

Two wrongs won't make a right.

Humiliation.

"I wouldn't want to join any club that would have someone like me for a member."
- Groucho Marks

*The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree."

Perhaps this could be seen as a warning not to marry someone who is too close because the genes would create a deformed offspring.

13.3
He hides his weapons in the thicket;
He climbs the high hill in front of it.
For three years he does not rise up.

*Fool me once, shame on you,
Fool me twice, shame on me.

13.4
He climbs up on his wall, he cannot attack.
Good fortune.

*Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Hexagram 14. Possession in Great Measure

Judgement
POSSESSION IN GREAT MEASURE.
Supreme success.

*Knowledge is power.

Image
Thus the superior man curbs evil and furthers the good
And thereby obeys the benevolent will of heaven.

*Don't worry - Be happy.

THE LINES

14.1
No relationship with what is harmful,
There is no blame in this.

*Don't sweat the petty stuff
And don't pet the sweaty stuff.
*Less is more.

14.2
A big wagon for loading
One may undertake something.
No blame.

*"You can't take it with you"...unless you have a big wagon or friends to help!

14.3
A prince offers it to the Son of Heaven.
A petty man cannot do this.

*Much is required from those to whom much is given.

14.4

14.6
He is blessed by heaven.
Good fortune.
Nothing that does not further.

*Good Friends.
Good meat,
Good God -
Let's eat!
- saying grace at summer camp.

Thoughts on hex.14:
1. Before taking possessions it's good to appreciate the benefit of not having possessions, or not having the wrong possessions.
2. To have a possession be ours it's not enough to just have it stored away, it must be accessible.
3. We might wish to solve the worlds problems but who but a prince has the money?
4. And just making a lot of noise doesn't help.
5. Better to simply do what one can with what one has.
5. Then the blessing comes.

15. Modesty

Judgement
MODESTY creates success.
The superior man carries things through.

*Do what you gotta do.

* See Image hex. 4, "The superior man fosters his character
By the thoroughness in all that he does."

Image
Thus the superior man reduces that which is too
much,
And augments that which is too little.
He weighs things and makes them equal.

*Expect the best.
Prepare for the worst.

THE LINES

15.1
The superior man modest about his modesty
May cross the great water.
Good fortune.

*"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." - Walt Disney

*Do or do not do.
There is no try.
- Yoda

* "Lower your expectations about 20 %" - Lewis Black response to thunderous applause as he walked on stage.

15.2
Modesty that comes to expression,
Perseverance brings good fortune.

*Speak the speech, I pray you,
As I have pronounced it to you,
trippingly on the tongue.
- Hamlet

15.3
A superior man of modesty and merit
Carries things to conclusion.
Good fortune.

*
There is no end to the good one can do,
If you don't care who gets the credit.
-Harry Truman.

* Do your best,
Then give it a rest.

15.4
Nothing that would not further modesty
In movement.

*Do each task for its own sake.

15.5
No boasting of wealth before one's neighbor.
It is favorable to attack with force.
Nothing that would not further.

* Not "pulling rank" or "playing the race card."

15.6
Modesty that comes to expression.
It is favorable to set armies marching
To chastise one's own city and one's country.

*Before you attempt to take a splinter out of another man's eye
Pull the plank out of your own.

Notes:
15.4 Not seeking to be a favorite.
15.5 Not playing favorites.

16. Enthusiasm

Judgement
ENTHUSIASM. It furthers one to install helpers
And to set armies marching.

To the supreme Deity,
Inviting their ancestors to be present.

*Strike up the band!

16.1
Enthusiasm that expresses itself
Brings misfortune.

*All hat, no cattle.

16.2
Firm as a rock. Not a whole day.
Perseverance brings good fortune.

*Curb your enthusiasm.

16.3
Enthusiasm that looks upwards creates remorse.
Hesitation brings remorse.

*He who hesitates is lost.

16.4
The source of enthusiasm.
He achieves great things.
Doubt not.
You gather friends around you
As a hair clasp gathers the hair.

* Run it up the flag pole
And see if anyone salutes it.

*The more the merrier.

*Enthusiasm is infectious.

16.5
Persistently ill, and still does not die.

*

16.6

But if after completion one changes,
There is no blame.

Hexagram 17. Following

17. Following

Judgement
FOLLOWING has supreme success.
Perseverance furthers. No Blame.

*Go with the flow.

Image
Thus the superior man at nightfall
Goes indoors for rest and recuperation.

*Early to bed, early to rise,
Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

17.1
The standard is changing.
Perseverance brings good fortune.
To go out of the door in company
Produces deeds.
--
when you wake up in the morning, "the standard" is no longer Sleep Well, it's Get up and Do Something!

*Love all, trust few, do wrong to none.
- Shakespeare

17.2
If one clings to the little boy,
One loses the strong man.
--
If you think you were smart enough yesterday and stay with that, you lose the opportunities to learn the really good stuff today.

*You can't ride two horses
With one behind.

17.3
If one clings to the strong man,
One loses the little boy.
Through following one finds what one seeks.
It furthers one to remain persevering.
----
You can't know and not know at the same time. Follow your ideal.
Never give up.

*" Once you have found him,
Never let him go."
- Some Enchanted Evening lyric

17.4
Following creates success.
Perseverance brings misfortune.
To go one's way with sincerity brings clarity.
How could there be blame in this?
---
We all have to go sometime. When it's time to go do it with grace.

*Knowing when it's time to leave can be the smartest thing to know.

*"Oh, please don't go!
We'll eat you up,
We love you so."
And Max said, "No."
-Where The Wild Things Are

17.5
Sincere in the good. Good fortune.

*Follow your bliss.

17.6
He meets with firm allegiance
And is still further bound.
The king introduces him
To the Western Mountain.

*Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

*What you are doing,
I cannot do and
What I am doing,
You cannot do.
But together we can do
Something beautiful for God.
- Mother Teresa
---
Hexagram 17 Following seems to me to be about the recognition that we are not always 100% awake. Parts of our being go to sleep while other parts of our being "mind the store."

And strengthens their spirits.

*Wake up! Wake up, you sleepy head.

Cheer up! Cheer up! The sun is red.
Live! Love! Laugh and be happy!

- When The Red Red Robin Comes

18.6
He does not serve kings and princes,
Sets himself higher goals.

*Thomas Jefferson instructed his gardener to plant a certain tree on his property. The gardener questioned his choice saying that the particular tree would take 100 years to mature. Jefferson replied, "Then don't delay another minute! Plant it today!"
----
I see 18 as the soul entering heaven each night. At line 1 Jesus, The Son, meets you andasks if you had a good experience, if not he promises God will make it right. 2. Mother Earth is never to blame. She is very sensitive. Put all the responsibility on God. 3. We immediately set to putting things right. An overnight healing! but wait, maybe the less than positive condition was serving a purpose, maybe we entered to energetically. 4,But don't not do anything. 5.Gradually at the proper time and place everything is healed.
6. Upon awaking he vows to use the wisdom he has gained from this experience not to make money but to turn man's attention to spirit.

- "Getting to Know You" by Oscar Hammerstein

19.6
Greathearted approach.
Good fortune. No blame.

*Santa Claus is Coming to Town
---
After sleep in hex 18. the awakening spirit is comes down from heaven and in Approach approaches the earth plane and sees things from the widest possible perspective and is keen on lifting Mankind to his new perspective. The danger is that man awakens and uses his insights for material gain rather than for higher learning. The lines themselves describe the higher consciousness linking with the lower self and then having to overcome inertia and eventually connecting with Higher Group Consciousness and moving up.

Full of trust they look up to him.

And gave them instruction.

*Animals and people need role models. It's not just the best way they learn - it's the only way they learn.

20.1
Boy like contemplation.
For an inferior man, no blame.
for a superior man, humiliation.

*If you would have known better
