Hexagram 13.2.3 seems to be wary of private friendship at this point. They may be particularly aware of how you treat others in the group. Important that you treat all with thoughtful respect, show yourself to be a valuable addition to the whole team.
Hexagram 15 suggests to me a Modest man who does his job in life without fanfare. Whether he is the king or the janitor doesn't matter. He fulfills his assigned role and does the work that needs to be done with dignity. I think of bees where they all look alike and each does their part for the hive. As a response to the attitude you should take with your boss I think you are being encouraged to see yourselves as each doing your job and maybe he interprets his role as the one who should be demanding but you don't have to see him as someone with more power than you. See yourselves as equals. Focus on the job you are there to do. Stay Modest and simply go about your business.
Good luck!
what is my role/position in the team I work with, 7 unchanging
Some definitions of 'shi'/Army are:
A model / an example / a master / a teacher / a tutor / to teach / to pattern or model after another / a specialist.
So I believe they respect your expertise with something particular and hope to learn from you (?).
Perhaps you are being advised to think of your role in being part of the team as similar to the way one might be a part of an army and that your position will improve as you act as a soldier on the battle field might. That is, you are advised to care passionately about the work goals, to stay closely involved with the day to day activities and to be generous in training and caring for your co-workers.
