As a Taoist you are supposed to adapt to circumstances like a bending reed.

But how about living in a society that is anything but Taoist. Should you then live in a non-Taoist manner in order to follow the Taoist recommendation on adapting to circumstances.

Any thoughts on this matter?

You might want to post this question on a Taoist forum.

Taoist monk Zhang Sanfeng is attributed as the founder of Tai Chi Chuan. A teacher down his lineage once wrote (paraphrasing), 'be like a blade of grass, instead of a tree, during a hurricane.' It was of course in regards to self defense, but one could apply it to other areas of survival.

Bend, adapt, survive.
This is entirely different than blindly following trends and norms of a culture.
AND it doesn't mean to shun technology, in order to seek some asthetic of ascetic.
Buddha tried asceticism for a while and counseled against it, advising to seek a middle way.
