There's a list on what You ask for in "An anthology of I Ching" by W.A. Sherrill and W.K. Chu, Arkana, 1989 (PDF)

Thanks svenrus. Read the "An Anthology of I Ching" but the info provided does not depicted all the occupations listed.

Yes, I'm taking everything seriously re I Ching. The I Ching has become my bible, gospel, guardian, protector, pathfinder and more. It lights my life journey.

From what I read, lawyers (general) are depicted by Qian. It can be be Kan too depending on the context.

Is Criminal an occupation? Why not? it depends on the individual and how you perceived it.

Hi, Moss:

I always believed that any trigram can represent any occupation, if not, there must be much superposition because there are infinite occupations, depending on the degree of accuracy we pretend in classification, but there are only eight trigrams.

I will consult Sherrill as Svenrus adviced.

Of course that Crime occupates many people be occasional, part time or full time, but Criminal lacks of accuracy for there are many specializations, some are professionals, some are amateurs...

Hi, Globalex: I wonder what for do you need to correlate trigrams with occupations. And why are not in the list some highly interesting occupations like mother, wife, bride, girlfriend or at least housekeeper?
Isn't the list a little gender biased?

All the best,

Charly

About the lists, came to my mind the Preface of Foucault's «Order of Things»

MICHEL FOUCAULT
Order of Things
(Preface)

«This book first arose out of a passage in Borges, out of the laughter that shattered, as I read the passage, all the familiar landmarks of my thought—our thought that bears the stamp of our age and our geography—breaking up all the ordered surfaces and all the planes with which we are accustomed to tame the wild profusion of existing things, and continuing long afterwards to disturb and threaten with collapse our age-old distinction between the Same and the Other.

This passage quotes a ‘certain Chinese encyclopaedia’ in which it is written that ‘animals are divided into:

(a) belonging to the Emperor,
(b) embalmed,
(c) tame,
(d) suckling pigs,
(e) sirens,
(f) fabulous,
(g) stray dogs,
(h) included in the present classification,
(i) frenzied,
(j) innumerable,
(k) drawn with a very fine camelhair brush,
(l) et cetera,
(m) having just broken the water pitcher,
(n) that from a long way off look like flies’.

In the wonderment of this taxonomy, the thing we apprehend in one great leap, the thing that, by means of the fable, is demonstrated as the exotic charm of another system of thought, is the limitation of our own, the stark impossibility of thinking that.»

Michel Foucault: The Order of Things
Source: University of Toronto
Link: http://individual.utoronto.ca/bmclean/hermeneutics/foucault_suppl/OT_Borges.htm

Say, in each TAXONOMY underlies, not so hidden, something ABSURD.

Foucault is quoting J.L.Borges' «The Analytical Language of J. Wilkins» that speaks of a Chinese Enciclopedia bringing the curious animals' classification.

Ch.

I don't understand why you said that "this stuff is not I Ching".
How much do you know about Plum Blossom Metholody by Shao Yung (Shao Kang Jie)?

Hi Charly,

Thanks for your reply.

Listing mother, wife, bride, etc. is easy. You see, I used Plum Blossom Methodology 95% of the time. When a divination is presented about a of dilemma, for example, "What occupation should I do - accountant or lawyer?", I just want to know which of the trigram represents it - whether it is the Ti trigram or one of the Yung trigrams. By knowing which of the trigram represents the said occupation, it tells me that I'm on the right path and which of the forces are affecting it directly or indirectly.

Sometimes, when a dilemma question is asked, the presentation showed only one of the occupation. It is presented by the Yung trigram with the Moving Line. And surprisingly, the other occupation is presented in the Yung trigram of the Changed Hexagram.

Interpretating the presentation can be a challenge sometimes but incredibly exciting and mind-blowing.

Thank you for the article by Michel Foucault. The concept therein does explains some of the divination I came across.

Cheers

Oh ok, our confusions are becoming clear.
When I say 'I Ching', I mean the ancient Zhou Oracle, line text, and Images added around 200 B.C.E.

How much do you know about Plum Blossom Metholody by Shao Yung (Shao Kang Jie)?
Really not much.
Only that is a numerology system, no?
Numerology is not integral or necessary to the Oracle I consult.
And, if I get a reading (which I completely understand) then pass it through some system such as five elements or a numerology chart,
the answer becomes something different.
The word for what they become is,
for lack of a better term,
wrong.

(real example reading of mine:
I ask where a man is.
I generate six lines/Gua 37 unchanging.
Then I speak with someone who confirms that the man was at home with his family at the time of my consult. If any system changes 37 unchanging to any other answer at all the answer is incorrect. Is this easy to see?)

(And about that list, where is it from?
((re-)programmable computers didn't exist until the 20th century.)

The Plum Blossom is not a numerology system. The true numerology system using I Ching is Tieh Pan Shen Shu by Shao Yung himself. This methodology has numerous texts to consult.

There are many methodologies using the I Ching - Najia; Chuko Shen Shu; Tzu Wei; Tzu Pin; Nine Star Astrology; etc. Each of them is correct in itsr own way. I just choose one where I find it easy for me to use, understand and comfortable with.

You have generated Hex 37 (Family) for a certain guery. There are many ways of doing that - cards, date and time; dice; yarrow sticks; flipping a page in the I Ching Canon; word(s); etc. Likewise, there are many ways in interpreting the hexagram generated.

Your generated Original Hex 37 may or may not have any changing lines. It represents the situation "now". Do you need to speak with someone who confirmed the man is at home with his family? If you have confidence and fate in the I Ching, you don't need too. Unless you want to confirm your divination. The Nuclear Hexagram represents the hidden possibility, and the Changed Hexagram (if it has a moving line(s)) represents the "future" situation. From the Changed Hexagram, it may transform to its Evolutionary Hexagram as created by Mondo Secter.

You asked where does the list comes from? Well, it's just from me. I just want to kow which trigram represents each of the occupation. This will assist me greatly when I interpret the divination using my methodology.

Hope my explanation helps.

Hope my explanation helps.

Yes, thank you.

The matter of the man and 37 unchanging was thus:

He went missing for a few days after being released from a hospitalization for dizziness, confusion, and falling.
I cast the I Ching around 11pm one night, and got the 37 unchanging.
Early the next morning I spoke with the young person who was worried about him, the one that prompted me to consult. She told me he had returned home to his family the previous night.

So, the Plum Blossom method cross references with the Chinese calendar.

I do have one question for you, globalex.

How do you account for the fact that I am able to consult the I Ching, without referencing any calendar, and still obtain the answers that I seek? (every time)

Surely, it is not because I am an anomoly, that the spirits take pity on?

Here are some thoughts:
Witch - Dui (lake) also means "witch".
Accountant, System Analyst- Kun (earth) also means "multitude".
Human Resources, Politician - Dui (lake), "convincing".
Economist - Xun (wind), "good income, profit".
Army Officer - Li (fire), "armour, weapons".
Tailor - Kun (earth), "cloth".
Submariner, Oil Rigger - Kan (water), "fatigue, dangerous travel".
Cartographer - Xun (wind), "craftmanship".

Hi, Glob:

About Plum Blossom little I know. Only whay I remember of the late Jou Tsung Hwa, Tao of Divination. Here in the forum there was an specialist in Weng Wang Divinarion, Ivonne, but it was years ago.

All my experience with divination was reading the Zhou Yi mainly in traditional renderings like Wilhelm / Baynes or Blofeld. The last years I was more interested in modernist translation wich leaded me to trying with my own literal alternatives, always tentative and much of the time contradictory.
I have little time for studying another methodology. Nobody's perfect!

I don't know how can we help you with the theme of occupations. If you have an idea, let us know.

Be welcome,

Charly

Hi Charly,
Thank you for your kind assistance. The reply from Diamanda is fine. It gives me some food for thought.
There are so many methodologies to approaching I Ching. Just getting to learn one methodology properly takes so much time and effort. I have been at it for 8 years and I'm still struggling with so many unanswered questions. Every time, I learn something new.
Thank you once again.

I generate 6 lines (using coins), then read the text for the hex's and lines that are generated.

How does that relate to my question?

My answer:
There are many ways in generating the 6 lines of the hexagrams including the changing lines. Besides coins, you can use the dice or the yarrow sticks. This is the traditional / classical method.

The Plum Blossom method do NOT make use of the coins, dice or yarrow sticks. Either method make use of randomness (and synchronicity as put forward by Carl Jung).

Mondo Secter has written an article of generating a hexagram just by trigram representation.

Each to his own. Different folks, different strokes.
