When I was a teenager growing up in San Francisco someone had predicted a date when the state would have a massive earthquake and would sink into the Pacific Ocean.Remember the Mayan Calendar? We survived that. Remember the Europeans (and their decendants) who freaked out every time the calendar reached certain dates? (the years C.E. 666, 999, 1666, 1999) We survived that too ....
Since I don't know all that much about Christianity or consider it much, I'm not sure how I might consider this information? Or what meaning or importance it would have? Any suggestions? In the first century C.E.,
John wrote that it was the 'end times' right then .... So, yes it was a thing. Gives one a whole new way to consider Christianity, doesn't it?
I'm not sure how I might consider this information?
Ah, yes. I get it. I'd say only that I'm not sure if 'well intentioned' is always the correct descriptor (the word 'stupid' comes to mind), and since these statements are highly suspect, what else might we reasonably question?Simply as a picture of well intentioned error compounded on error over thousands of years and the subsequent calamities. (They have been saying it is the 'end times' since they began.)
what else might we reasonably question?
I am not sure what you mean here? Can you say more? Give examples? Thanks.I think some global catastrophes might have been averted unbeknownst to us thanks to guidance from oracles.
Well, hmmm. I'm not sure how the subject of pre-destiny came up. I don't think that things are predestined, though I do think the universe follows certain natural or karmic laws - but that just a guess on my part. But I think that even if things were predetermined, that the Yi might still be of use, if people didn't know or think that things were predestined, - so oracles would then give people a sense that they did have choices. If everything was predestined, what's the point of oracles, astrology, etc?
Well, I think that people developed these tools, not that they were 'given' to us.These are tools given to humans ....
This statement seems highly speculative and more that a bit vague. It would be like saying 'some people may like peanut butter ...' It doesn't really carry much meaning or tell us much. There's been incidents in recent history when very powerful nations have stopped just short of starting a chain of events that could lead to massive losses of lives globally. Some of the people who took the decisions to hold back may have been consulting oracles.
I think we might all agree that in ancient China (and perhaps other countries) it was regular practice to consult the Yi and I assume other types of divination. But I find myself being a bit suspect when you make a statement about what is currently going on, based on the past - without offering any proof. And left with that uncertainty it comes across more as a fictional sterotype about what you 'suspect' modern 'Asians' do and don't do.In Asia it has been a common thing for rulers to consult astrologers and in some places oracles. I suspect leaders of some other nations either consult astrologers, oracles or rely on prophecy.
