Richard Smith is a professor of imperial Chinese history, and has written a number of excellent books on the I Ching and Chinese divination, including The I Ching: A Biography,
Fathoming the Cosmos and Ordering the World: The Yijing (I Ching, or Classic of Changes) and Its Evolution in China, and Mapping China and Managing the World: Culture, Cartography and Cosmology in Late Imperial Times.
These are highly recommended for both general reading, history buffs, as well as starting point for researchers. Much on global spread of Yi.
I've grouped them together in one review: https://contemplatingiching.wordpress.com/2019/06/07/681/
