Hello friends. I am new to this forum and the I Ching. My husband and I are moving across the country at the end of January: excited for the location, but nervous due to potentially losing my job. I sought guidance from the I Ching last night regarding my current job. A job I would really love to keep because I am happy with my team & responsibilities, comfortable (3 years in), and also content with my income. I will be meeting with my boss early next week to break the news to him. I am going to propose continued remote employment at his company. And if he says no, I have my last day of employment laid out for him. I’ve combed through my day to day responsibilities and I am confident I can continue to be an asset to the company. It really just comes down to if my boss is open and comfortable with me being many states away. My boss can be moody, hot headed, sharp, and quick to change his mind. That being said, he speaks highly of me and has told me I’m invaluable. I asked the I Ching, “What will be the outcome of me asking my boss if I can work remote in my current position?”. Perhaps I posed the question incorrectly the more I think of it. Maybe the results were in response to me actually asking my boss a question that I’m nervous to say and nervous to hear the answer to. It is scary & uncharted territory for me to move across county, leave a good job because we want a lifestyle change, and to present my boss with a proposed plan to work a remote position. I’m dreading this meeting, so maybe it’s more about how I feel about this question I’m about to ask him, verses what my boss’s reaction and answer will be. Which makes me wonder if I should toss my coins again? Thoughts? Anyways, I received The Corners of the Mouth 27.1.2.5 to 29(K’an/ The Abysmal- Water). Any insight to this potential meaning to my situation would be wonderful. I’m finding it difficult to interpret, especially being a newbie. I feel like it may be warning me to choose my words wisely (as they could help or hurt me) while meeting with him next week, uncharted territory: moving out of state, new job (if I cannot keep my current one), or working remote at my current job (since I have not worked remote before). Danger: maybe moving is a bad idea? Maybe staying with this company is actually not good for me? Or if he says yes (doubtful I think) will he pull the rug out from under me shortly after? Uncertainty for sure. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and goodnight.

You asked for an outcome, so it's tempting to think the lines describe your boss's reaction. Not sure, though. Maybe partly him and partly you.

I think you're right about the uncharted territory, uncertainty, etc. That's hexagram 29 ("Repeating Chasms"). He might think the whole thing will be really complicated and difficult, and he'll have no idea how to navigate it.

You seem to have it figured out, which is terrific (no wonder you're a good employee), but is there any chance it'd be more complicated than you know of?

Wonder if line 1 could mean him sort of stammering and not knowing how to answer...

Line 2 - "unbalanced nourishment" - maybe don't underestimate how much this might catch him off guard and knock him off balance. Lines 1 and 2 might mean you'll have to give him time to catch up and come to grips with it. Maybe don't go into this meeting expecting him to give you an answer right away.

Line 5 -
"Rejecting the standard,
Dwelling here with constancy: good fortune.
Cannot cross the great river."

"Rejecting the standard" does sound like letting you do this (since that's the non-standard thing) - then it says dwelling in that with constancy is good fortune. So far so good. But it ends with "Cannot cross the great river."

I figure crossing the great river is also letting you work remotely, since that's the big adventurous thing. Crossing rivers in ancient China was a big deal, as they didn't have bridges or necessarily even boats. They had to wade on foot, which was - again - dangerous, uncertain, and a big commitment. It echoes 29 pretty well.

So I wonder if he might want to, but won't know how or won't be able to make it work for some reason? You think it can work, and you know your own job, so I might be on the wrong track there.

Again, it's great that you have it all figured out, but maybe don't lay out the entire plan in this meeting and don't expect an answer right away. Maybe let him know you have ideas when he wants them.

But if this doesn't make any sense please say so. You're the one who knows your boss, your job, and your company.

Another idea - maybe line 5 also could mean it can't be all straightened out before you leave. The "Dwelling here with constancy: good fortune" part - early next week till the end of January isn't very much time. Any chance of you staying behind long enough to get things arranged? Or something like that? (Then "Can't cross the great river" would mean you can't cross it - move - quite yet.)

Hi! I'm new here, too, and this is my first post! That said, I present my opinion humbly:
I agree that the answer you received is about the outcome of asking your boss.

27.1. "The Sacred Turtle"-In this line, the turtle symbolizes wisdom and spiritual openness. Admire these qualities in others and notice them in yourself. If you ignore them, misfortune could start to crawl into your life.
That would make sense to describe your trepidation and assure you of some agreeableness.

Line 2 "Seeking the Best Nourishment"- This line is a reminder to take responsibility for one's own nourishment. Don't receive from the ungenerous. Be wise with your giving as well. Give help to those who have genuine potential, not to those who are unmotivated or ungenerous.
I think, serves to remind us that generosity begets generosity. If your working relationship is strong, then expect well, but if the response is negative, you've been receiving nourishment from an ungenerous source.

Line 5
"Stepping off the Path"- Nurture yourself by taking a break from forward motion. Stand still for a while. Don't start a new project, job or romance just yet. Seek spiritual counsel first.
I think that would lead one to be still and patient in waiting and prepare for a change in direction.

Changing into Dispersing
To me, this seems pretty clear; you're literally going to become distant from one another. You'll speak less and less and your relationship will fade in your absence.

What I would expect from this reading is that he'll be understanding if you let him and professional, and you'll have to be patient about it.

Hello Liselle! I wanted to thank you for taking time out of your day to help me dissect my I Ching reading. It means so much to me and I truly appreciate your insight. I’ve read your thoughts numerous times and will continue to do so, especially leading up to tomorrow and as next week unfolds. You made so many thoughtful points. You’re absolutely right, although my boss may want to say yes, there could be other issues such as taxes and legalities I am unaware of that could ultimately prevent me from being able to work remote. Also, yes, my job could become more complicated if it were to turn into a remote position, which I would expect some hurdles, and having to approach things from new angles. I liked when you suggested the following, “Maybe let him know you have ideas when he wants them.” I think that is a wonderful idea so I do not overwhelm him even more. Thank you again for your insights and wonderful energy. I will keep you updated on how the meeting goes.
All my best, Jessica.
