Joys of museums

This year I’m giving myself Fridays off. I don’t seem to get appreciably less work done this way than when I was staring at the computer 5 1/2 days a week, and I’m rediscovering some good things – books, for instance.

Today we went up to the British Museum – in theory, to see the terracotta warriors, though we weren’t all that surprised when they’d sold out for the day by the time we arrived. Instead we looked at Chinese jade, and bronze from the Zhou and Shang.

Yesterday I was finishing up a customer’s reading with Hexagram 50, the Vessel. Today I was inches away from the ding themselves. Then there were bronze ornaments for horses and chariots (47.4?), a Shang vessel with its own ladle (51),  jue for wine (61.2), and any number of tigers ‘glaring, glaring’ and dragons in full flight. And one small fragment of a scapula with a divination record.
