Hexagram 45, line 1 and computer chaos

Where had I got to? Ah yes… started recording, and discovered exactly what could go wrong when Program X disabled my soundcard. Logged out. Restarted computer. Restarted browser. Logged in. Not going to try Program X again. Turn on the internal meeting room recorder instead…

Flashback to a reading a few days earlier:

Before the webinar, I was very worried about my computer’s habit of freezing – anything up to four and five times a day, and always at truly inspired moments. Much divination ensued. Reinstalling Windows sounded (with 27 changing to 2) like it mightwork, but would be a distraction from the preparation I still needed to do.

What if I don’t reinstall Windows, how will the system cope?

Hexagram 45, changing at line 1, Hexagram 17.
Gathering Following…
We call these meetings ‘I Ching Gatherings’, so this much is clear. There is also the double meaning of placing a lot of heavy demands in one place. And Following suggests things running smoothly, though not necessarily in the way I would plan.

The moving line made me laugh:

‘There is sincerity and confidence, no completion.
Hence disorder, hence gathering together.
Like a call, one clasp of the hands brings about laughter.
No doubts.
Going on, not a mistake.’

So I expected some computer-induced chaos to start with – and also assumed that we would get over it. And after I started closing a lot of programs that normally run in the background, I had a full five successive days with no freezes at all. This after the previous 5 days with at least 2 per day.

Fast-forward. I’d just restarted and logged in again. Sure enough, Stephen was in full flow as I logged in, fielding questions. Kevin sent helpful private text messages to tell me where we’d got to. I turned the meeting room recorder on.

The computer froze. For the first time in five days.

One further restart later, I logged back in. Things were once again going very smoothly without me. (And I’ll get a recording from someone else.)

  1. Hi Hilary,
I must kindly say I disagree with you on this particular subject, i.e. using divination in order to solve technical problems.
It could be funny to do, but, as yourself stated very clearly in this website, Yi cannot be a substitute for human expertise.
For similar reasons I would not use Yi for medical diagnosis, of course here the consequences of a wrong diagnosis could be more serious than a broken computer…..

But anyway maybe I’m wrong, could be a useful discussion about the limits in usage of Yi…
Thanks for this wonderful site and your work, a hug !

  2. Oh yes, I agree there are limits, depending on the expertise of the person consulting. In my case, with computers, not a fat lot. Right now I know from Yi that my computer is in a state of 48, line 1 – but would reformatting the hard drive cure a muddy well? Or is it just plain wearing out, after 2 years of constant use? (In other words, I haven’t learned all that much from the reading.)

I would say that divination to diagnose problems is one thing, and divination to test out possible solutions is quite another. I may not be able to correlate well-imagery with my computer’s RAM usage or whatever, but I can recognise bad news when I see it.

But like you say, the worst consequences of misinterpreting readings about these things are not so bad. Spending money I don’t need to spend on a new machine, and/or wasting a day or two on removing, reformatting, reinstalling. Nothing major.

Medical divination? I don’t attempt it.
