Do you see hexagram 38 as negative or positive...or could be both depending on the situation?

Both. The perspective is on dealing with oppositions and covers the use of a mirror to 'reflect' others seeing themselves in you and so leaving you alone to get on with 'your thing' ;-)

The lake base gives a focus on self-reflection but figuratively as well as literally. Reflection doubled (hex 58) focuses on intensity in that reflection.

Imagine a show biz persona who goes home at night to become someone totally different. The show biz side lets others see themselves etc and so not see the 'home' person - that is advantageous to the home person ;-)

38 shares structural space with 54 and so covers the high energy expenditure focus (in 54 that energy reflects immaturity or a need to grow up too fast etc)

38 is unconditional, 54 is conditional.

38 has a skeletal form described by analogy to 40 - a focus on tension release through relaxed structure. - the 'mirror' aids in relaxing the tension. We then add furnishings to bring out 38.

Chris.
