Etymology of the ideogram Song.6
The ideogram used to illustrate the sixth hexagram is assembled with two side-by-side figures. The portion on the left is the general symbol used to express talking, or speech; composed from the symbol for mouth below a sequence of horizontal strokes representing the sound waves emitted by the action of speaking. Anciently, this symbol also evoked the crossing of a delimited territory.
On the right part of the figure is a character conventionally rendered by Duke. In classical China, the Duke represented the highest form of nobility, as is noticeable with the renown Duke of Zhou.
