I spent last week on vacation in Kauai, Hawaii which was, needless to say, a blast. While I was there, I noticed a few interesting traditions: I went to a luau and it starts with a cermony where they raise a cooked pig out of the earth. Then, of course, there is hula dancing. And finally, they have tiki's.

It's widely agreed on that the Polynesians spread out across the Pacific islands from the asian mainland. It was interesting to wonder if some of these traditions echo some of the ancient practices referred to in the I Ching text.

In particular, I was thinking of the animal sacrifices of Hex 63 and the sacred dance referred to in 53.6. And I read about the tiki's and they are based on a concept of ancestor worship, with a powerful ancestor become a sort of familial guardian spirit.

Of course, I'm no anthropologist, so this is just free-form speculation on my part, but I do find it interesting food for thought.

Hi Jte,

I like your free associations about migration. 53. Where my grandparents come from its called a pig roast. But it's probobly called that everywhere. I will try and find more stuff about what you mention here. Tikis. The dance in 53 6 is with feathers, right? I think that is a sad omen, even though it's good fortune. Hawaii is supposed to be the most beautiful place on earth.

Yes in 53.6, they are goose feathers, although this is (like all the I Ching symbols) metaphorical. I've seen readings where 53.6 was pretty direct - it referred to leftover celebration decorations/paraphenelia such as cards, flowers, gift certificates, etc...

Hello Jeff and Ichie ! Can you give more information about this interpretation of 53.6 ??
PLEEEEASE !!
This "dance with feathers" never made sense to me. I always envisioned it as some kind of joyfull event, an omen of fullfillment. Looking through my IC-diaries, your interpretation seems to be much closer to the truth.

I would love to see some more ideas on 53,6, too. It seems to be kind of the apotheosis of the goose - fulfilment of its purpose at a higher level, above and beyond that journey it's been making throughout the lines. But then again, if the goose could talk it might have a different view...
