Hi,

My 7 year old son is on the Autistic spectrum and suffers from mild autism with moderate learning difficulties. He is also very hyperactive, although this seems to have improved a lot over the last year, but has not been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. He is in a special needs class and at one point almost got kicked out the school due to his occasional violent behaviour and lack of co-operation. This has now improved and he has a a teaching assistant for him who provides 20 hrs of classroom support. In the afternoons he goes off to a special teaching unit that was specially funded for him and another boy with problems where he is taken swimming, parks ect.

He is generally a pleasant boy who is always smiling and loves chatting and meeting people (although very repetitive and can't have a normal conversation). Although he can have moods swings and quickly become very upset. He can do odd things like always play his Nintendo DS upside down.

The health professionals/doctors said it is highly unlikely he would improve greatly or ever be successful academically.

Obviously I am very concerned about his future so I asked the Iching: What does my son's future hold?
I got H15 modesty with no changing lines as the answer.

Any help in the interpretation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

hello Olly,

To me hex 15 , in this case, it is more like an advice for you.
Humility was(is) an innate attribute well praised in ancient China. Because if genuine it makes the person to very be careful in preparation. This for me, means you should turn your attention in preparation for the future and not the future itself.

Also i have this crazy idea to let him toss the coins, maybe something comes up as he knows better what he needs .

Hi-
I wouldn't think of 15 as being about either Modesty or Humility. 15 spends several lines talking about problems that we have with our ideas about modesty. Humility is more the subject of #62. Try thinking of 15 as Authenticity, "Keeping it Real", or "It is what it is," neither more nor less, just an accurate assessment of things. That's especially important for a condition without a cure. You need to know where you stand in reality before you can develop good adaptive strategies. Then, what the Yi might be suggesting is to focus on his strengths, developing the things that he has an aptitude for, and let him build on that. I've posted an article on AS on my website (I'm on that part of the spectrum), but I don't know how much of it might fit

if you could provide a link? .

There's a pull down menu on each member's name that will let you write to them or visit their site. But here's my link anyway. The article is about 3/4 of the way down the page.

There's also a free, downloadable Yijing translation there.

To me 15 speaks to the need to have great respect for this child. a deference to his potential. Time and experience are now teaching many about the potential for children on the spectrum. So little is truly known and so much is being revealed.
It also occured to me that the 15 speaks to the arrogance of the professionals who make judgements.
Thank good ness for the children who dont fit the mold. who can truly know what they are here to do, or how much they can teach us? they need a wide berth to be able to be who they are. and people who believe in their possibility, possibilities which obviously can't be measured by the yardsticks of the status quo.
best to you.
