Kind of odd. When I awoke from a short nap this afternoon I saw his face. He looked at me.
Later I turned on the TV and there he was, the new pope!
They say that he is very conservative, but I like him, he has good eyes.

Ditto, Martin, I like his eyes!! very alive...even tho the press about him is a little off-putting.....a very conservative pope.

The former pope died on my birthday at almost exactly the time of my birth. Today, altho i NEVER come home from work at lunch, I did (for unrelated reasons), and I walked in the door, idly flipped on the TV for a second, and right there was the cardinal announcing :Habemus Papam.
synchronicities : )

I am glad he has good eyes. And he looked at you...! I hope you gave him a good wink. He may need it.

It should be remembered that the Pope's primary purpose is to head the Catholic church, which is at its roots an orthodox and conservative religion. His role isn't as a social worker to the world. That, imo, would place too much authority upon his person and office. He can still be humanitarian, but concerning his function, it is to lead the Catholic church, and that only.

My first mentor, teacher of my life, is an Aries. I will always love Aries. Jeany and Gene are wonderful. The new pope? Last night on the phone, I told my friend "it's Ratzinger" "WHAT???" "Ratzinger" "WHAT????" "RATZINGER, the German, RATZINGER!!!" "WHAAAT? A GERMAN RAPSINGER????" 50 cent is the new pope.

Happy birthday GENE! You rock! I would've thought *Leo* by your picture and (occasional) ferocious roar.

Hi Guys,
haven't been on the board for a while and was lurking, saw the title. Habemus Papam ? Being of the wandering tribe, and an Aries, this is not a term I am familiar with. Anyway, I guess it means 'the top dog' or something like that. I saw the chief rabbi's remarks in the press last week, he said that Ratzinger was 'kosher'. (my translation).
Interestingly, being an Aries born between the 14th and 23rd, puts him in a very interesting, group of powerful and influencial people born at this time!

It's only Latin. It means "We have a pope!" Churchmen love Latin. They're less enthusiastic about Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic, the actual languages their scriptures are written in. But ever since the Latin Fathers, especially Jerome, it's been Latin, Latin, Latin.

David, as a fellow lurker, it's good to see you back.

Vale!

Oh my goodness...

What karma has this forum reaped that it's drawn back some of my favorite philosophers... first Dharma... now David. I've missed you very much too David. It's so good to see your words again.

And Lindsay... for some reason I always feel your presence here... feel that at any moment you will add some sobering thoughts to a thread where it seems the thoughts have taken wing and are flying higher and higher.

Love

The way I see it, Val, every silver lining belongs inside a cloud.

I didn't read it Val, but it is on my to-read list.
However, I also have a places-to-go list, a things-to-eat list, a stupid-things-to-do list and so on and so on. So, well, maybe next year.
