help with translation?

Delving into some contemporary Chinese artists files, I've come across Huang Ri's Language/Color Series from 1996.
Here's an online example, check the image on right .

The image I'm looking at (scanned ages ago from a source I'm still tracking down) consists of eight thickly-painted coloured panels--
white black yellow red purple blue green orange
--and in each panel there's a character embedded; these may have slang meanings.

I've attached a monochrome version, modified to make the characters more visible. If anyone's interested in translating, I'd be really grateful.
