I have always thought of 16 as a rather positive hexagram describing a time when you feel excited about something in a positive way, you make plans that just seem to carry you along toward this something in a joyous way. You're inspired, and that sounds positive.

Does this hexagram have a negative side as well? I received it in answer to a certain question regarding how someone feels when they think of something in particular and was taken aback. I expected a very negative answer because what is happening is negative, or so I thought. The answer made me think that this person doesn't view this thing as negative at all and that perhaps my impression of the situation is totally wrong. Let me cut to the chase here:

Would you expect this hexagram if someone felt angry when they thought about something? I have never seen the hexagram that way, yet this is the answer I received. I really thought the person would be angry and that it would reflect in the answer, but there was 16, unchanging. What gives?

Positive : with/from devotion to another/others comes awareness (enlightenment) - and so the enthusiasm, use of foresight to plan etc.

Negative : with/from fear comes surprise (shock, enlightening moment etc where to be enlightened about something does not mean it is positive))

Generic form : with/from contractive blending (issues of wholeness) comes expansive binding (issues of sharing time - the time element here is immediate, beginning, raw, as compared to wind that is delayed, cultivating, 'rising' to become influencial)

16 shares space with 35 where 16 is unconditional, 35 condiitional.

The infrastructure of 16 is described by analogy to 21 - problem solving (with enlightenment(surprise) comes direction, ideology (acceptance))

etc etc

Just in case the comment could be useful

When you allowed yourself to follow a blind enthusiasm, frustration may arrive

Best wishes

If someone was feeling 16, I wouldn't expect them to be angry. They might be thinking about the situation in dramatic ways - in big, colourful pictures, perhaps as if it were a blockbuster where they had the starring role.

Suggestion (at the risk of sounding like a broken record) - if it's important to know how the person feels, ask them.

Well-
The Nazis were most enthusiastic about der Fuhrer.
Of course there's a downside.
Lots of momentum going in the wrong direction

Could be. I render 16 as Preparing, but I used to call it Mobilizing. I could have called it Enthusiastic Gearing Up lol. Anyway, I'd read the Yi's response in your case as: you're gearing up to do battle; you're getting some sort of kick out of this.

"Would you expect this hexagram if someone felt angry when they thought about something?"

Yes, it could have two meanings.

The first could signify that the person has overcome the bad influence/thoughts and is happy to let it go. They are no longer under the influence of the anger that they once felt.

The second could be that they have been so angered by the "something" that it has brought out their worst instincts, giving them an enthusiasm to retaliate against a person or a thing. Bradford's suggestion regarding Hilter is a good example. Hilter whipped up enthusiasm among the ordinary German folk to hate the jews, leading to "crystal night" and later the arrest of all jews in old Germany.

Bradford wrote,
"Well-

All shook up

A well I bless my soul
What's wrong with me?
I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree
My friends say Im actin' wild as a bug
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

My hands are shaky and my knees are weak
I can't seem to stand on my own two feet
Who do you thank when you have such luck?
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

Please dont ask me whats on my mind
I'm a little mixed up, but Im feelin' fine
When I'm near that girl that I love best
My heart beats so it scares me to death!

She touched my hand what a chill I got
Her lips are like a vulcano that's hot
I'm proud to say shes my buttercup
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

My tongue get tied when I try to speak
My insides shake like a leaf on a tree
There's only one cure for this body of mine
That's to have the girl that I love so fine!

:D

bruce - that is lust dude, not enthusiasm. For enthusiasm try hare krishas or adventists or computer nerds at a sotware conference ;-)

The 'gushyness' is mixed with foresight re the future - and the other more local association has been to travelling to a local outdoor market where the apprehension of what is to come fills the air with enthusiasm about what one is selling/buying.

with/from devotion to another/others comes awareness (of what is to come, is present etc)

Emotionally the 'dark' side is with fear comes surprise.

Well, speak for yourself, Chris. Lust is just a naughty word for enthused. The visions/fantasies are often more intense than the reality.
