Here is a new entry in Steve Marshall's blog that I find very interesting and in tune with the way I think about consulting the Yi. I know I am in the minority about consulting the Yi sparingly and when in need--not needy, mind you-- but, heck!, I sometimes feel that people takes the Yi as if it were the "6 o'clock News" or a weather forecast.

Well, that's my monkey-wrench-thrown-in-the-gears for the day. I'll retire to my cave now to prepare both cheeks for slapping...

thank you for passing on that article, Luis. I am new to this site and, oh my, would hate to take an unpopular stance, but I also agree that one can hound the Yi way too much (as I have at times- let's be honest, many times) and in my experience, it loses its effectiveness when I do that. When I find myself asking things like "What if I were to go shopping now and mow the lawn later?" I get really annoyed with myself. What kind of answer am I expecting?! BUt let me tell you, as a single mom for ten years, at times doing graduate work and working by day, the I ching was my very best friend through many long, wearisome, scary nights. Me, my cup of warm milk , and my Yi...and he would tell me "Endure!" ...and.."eventually your undertakings are blessed," ...and "you are involved with the wrong group at work and you must keep your light hidden," etc, etc. Always so right on and like a kindly grandparent...my gratitude is great for the assistance and support. BUt I wouldnt go to any real-life, kindly and wise grandparent with any silly question that I should decide on my own!! ....this has helped me, as i write this, to realize I want to respect the Yi more and not act like a helpless adolescent who wants constant affirmation for everything I am doing. ( But this is just me, at this point, after 15 years of throwing coins. I have no judgement for the way anybody uses the I ching as I myself have used it in every way possible. I cant afford to be judgemental! I've thrown coins riding down the expressway at 55 miles an hour. God help me! Thanks again Luis!

Hi Jeany and welcome to Clarity.

Please don't take my comments as either a popular or unpopular view of things; they are just my very humble opinion and how I view and use the Yi. To each, his or her own. I may disapprove in the sense that I may frown to other's practices but I try not to be judgemental about it. It may sound as a contradiction but it is actually a matter of degrees. After the initial frown I move on and forget about it. However, when I read something I find resonance with I point it out: "this is what I mean"

And I agree with you. About your high speed castings, I certainly hope the Yi advised you to stop at the red light or to set your blinkers before taking the exit... It tried to do that but I use yarrows: quite difficult to steer using only your left knee...

How many swim strokes to cross a lake? As many as it takes.

S.M. is a natural and obviously gifted writer. It?s also his domain he writes to, so there can be no blame in anything he says there.

For the most part, I agree with the idea that one can over-use the oracle. However, evaluating excess isn?t a matter frequency, but of effectiveness. When the process is no longer effective it?s time to back off the coins and sticks.

I think it?s pretty arrogant to assume the effectiveness of the oracle for other people. I also thinks it?s pretty egotistical to assume that you have become the oracle itself. But as I said, it?s his site to say whatever he wishes.

My opinion on frequency? ?Times change, and with them their demands.?
