I have a friend who was withdrawn a bit from our social circle recently and seems down but is not the type of person to talk aout their feelings and just keeps to themselves

I asked the i ching what is going on with X and got 30.3 changing to 21
this line scared me cause fo the reference to whether death comes early or late to make the most of our time on earth, i wondered if this person was sick so...

i asked the iching to comment on X's health and got 53.4 to 33
i interpreted this as it is okay but not ideal and getting worse??

i asked the i ching what is ailing X and got 36.6 to 22
this suggests to me that maybe the issue is reaching it's climax and whatever it is will be over soon. but it's not really answering my question about what is ailing X

my fear is that this person is hiding a medical condition from us hence their going into hiding, but I am confused by these readings. Any help?

As with the death card in the tarot, allusions to death in the I Ching rarely refer to literal physical death. I might be inclined to read this as your friend going through the throes of a serious depression (the line refers to melancholy) and changing line 21 might refer to the need to cut through the depression and gain much-needed clarity.

53.3 to 33 suggests to me that your friend is having a momentarty lull in his/her health (either physical or mental rundown) and needs to rest/draw back from the world to come to terms with something (retreat).

36.6 to 22: The worst part of the depression seems to be reaching its climax and you will probably soon see your friend act like his/her old self again, although this may be a guise (Grace is in some ways about superficial appearances).

Ah 30.3, I can say with some confidence, having had it alot I think it refers to a 'woe is me' attitude mostly. One is not living in the now, one is preoccupied with looking on the bleak side, thinking of the end before the beginning has even begun.
I don't think it refers to actual death but worrying about death, endings, futility and so on. I've had it with regard to others health and its showed me their moaning and my concern and woe about their moaning was not the way to go. In short I reckon theres probably not too much wrong with this person. Can be when someone dramatises their own mood states, unwittingly, and kind of get to perversely enjoy being gloomy.

53.4 Hmm you asked this becasue you thought 30.3 meant he was sick...which leads on to a question which has no basis because he isn't necessarily ill. I don't think this refers to health but to the situation. Maybe hes taking time out, feels uncomfortable for some reason..anyhow its temporary. Geese don't stay perching in trees. Maybe hes hanging out with some different people for a while

36.6 Could be a link to depression but I agree with Folle hes probably just about over it.

oh wow, thank you both! Now that I read these responses I feel better knowing that is most likely just depression for some reason and not health related. I guess I read the first reading at face value and overeacted to the comment about death in the line. I've had other friends (not this one) hide serious illnesses before so I jumped to conclusions
I laughed when I read Trojan's answer, this person is definately very "woe is me" and over dramaticizes even the smallest problems! This has only been going on for 2 weeks so I'm glad to hear it seems to be coming to an end. I don't know if it's relevant but this person is a Cancer (astrological sign) and they fit the description to a T, suddenly becoming recluse for seemingly no reason and leaving everyone to worry!

LOL so am I, must be why i get 30.3 so often. I want to add a bit of a disclaimer also because of course I'm in no position to really comment on a persons health just through a reading, these were my impressions but if you have more reason to worry of course you should talk to him

I don't have any reason to believe my friend is in bad health other than my misinterpreting the first reading I got when i asked what is going on with them. I intend to call them as well to see what's up, but being the secrective being they are, I'm sure they will pass it off as nothing, LOL!
i do appreciate the added insight!
