Supply chain shock, viruses, and more. Focusing more on global concerns and interdependent connections, what will it take for the United States and China to stabilize their relationship in 2021?

Yi answers:
Hexagram 9.1.6 > 48
9.1: Return to one’s own way. How could that be faulty? Auspicious.
Both countries have been unrealistic about the world. China seeks to climb higher and higher, like many countries, to achieve a standard of living comparable to the United States. The world cannot sustain such ambitions. There are not enough resources to sustain a global United States, and the United States will have to be realistic about embracing a "less is more" philosophy. Do the people of the world really need all of these iDevices? I take this as advice to be realistic by living within our means. To return to one's own way and to assess where the modern world has failed is noble. The alternative to this is continuing to contend with each other over resources, woefully ignorant of the cost. Can China continue to grind its people down to the bone in order to attain a "higher" standard of living? What is lost in the transformation of China? Is the modern China becoming merely a pastiche facsimile of western consumerism?

9.6: Already rain, already dealing with it. Thanks to the virtue contained. Housewife divination: danger. The moon is almost full. The noble one rectifying: pitfall.
We are fortunate to have had a moment to "pause and reflect" and we should take advantage of the supply chain shock, Covid, and whatever other difficulties we face. From here can only lead to decline if the warning is not heeded. This is a time to consult the eternal source of virtue and wisdom (48) - before the inevitable decline following the Moon reaching full abundance.

A few questions for you:

* Which translation are you using?

* What is ‘supply chain shock’?

* And, is your question:

— Focusing more on global concerns and interdependent connections, what will it take for the United States and China to stabilize their relationship in 2021?

— Or is your question:
what will it take for the United States and China to stabilize their relationship in 2021?

These feel like different question, with the first one already ‘hinting’ at the answer: that stabilizing relations means focusing on interdependent connections.

Best, D.

I'm seeing 48. The Well as representing the world's resources and implying a good relationship means both countries, and all citizens of the world, must acknowledge we share this planet and equal access and sharing of resources must be the guiding principal. Hexagram 9.1.6 shows how we may reach this goal:

9.1
Return to the way, How could there be blame in this? Good fortune.

Following the 8.6 Union break up, this first line suggests the need to review past agreements and start fresh. I don't know anything about our treaties with China but I wonder if this line is referring to the imbalance in trade and pointing to a need for the U.S. to stop relying on Chinese manufacturing and hire Americans instead?

9.6
The rain comes. There is rest.
This is due to the lasting effects of character.
Perseverance brings the woman into danger.
The moon is nearly full.
If the superior man persists,
Misfortune comes.

I'm seeing this as saying restoring the balance of trade with China will not happen by making laws but by individuals vowing to "buy American" and no longer persist in wanting everything that catches the eye.

I'm pinning this interpretation on trade agreements just cause that's the only issue I know of with China but I really know nothing about our relationship with them at all so this reading may not be referring to trade but just saying overall in general there needs to be a recognition that we all drink from the same Well and countries should in general not be too dependant or too greedy.

Finally, the Image for 48. The Well says that "the superior man encourages people at their work and exhorts them to help one another." Perhaps advice to give more recognition to areas where American-Chinese relations are working well.
