I have an unpleasant situation with a neighbor that is getting more so by the day.

Our building is in the shape of a square, divided into 4 equal units. Each of us shares a common wall with 2 of our other neighbors. Above the bathrooms and part of the bedrooms is a storage area also with commons walls, but made from plain dry-wall, nothing substantial.

My neighbor is an extremely heavy smoker who never ventillates her apartment. She smokes in the bathroom and the bedroom. The smell has totally permeated my storage space to the point where I'm going to have to throw out all of the books stored up there and I no longer take out my holiday decorations because I can't get the stink off of them. As of Fall '03 the smell began to creep through the bedroom and bathroom walls into my bedroom and bathroom. I often wake up to the smell of a dirty ashtray.

I've talked to her before and she really doesn't care about it. She's in her mid-60's, has a health care aid who comes in daily - who also smokes - and she stays in her nightie watching TV all day, smoking.

I need to use my storage space - my living space is small, there's no place to put things. If the shoe were on the other foot, and this were the stink of a dirty cat box creeping into her house I'm pretty sure the story would be different.

I asked the Yi 3 questions:

What is the best to seek relief from this problem?
Response: Hx. 19 no changing lines

What if I take this to the management company?
Hx. 3 no changing lines - it will be tough to get anywhere with them on this

What if I don't take this to the management company?
Hx. 27 - no changing lines

I'm at a loss here to understand anything but a portion of Hx 3. Any input would be appreciated. I have no ill will toward this woman, but I'm kind of tired of doing the Lysol dance every day!

Peace,

Beth

I should add, the woman who shares the other common wall with her has the same problem, but she's getting it in her kitchen and bathroom. We're both non-smokers.

Have you ever heard of an ion-generator? Get a very strong one for the storage, and 'human-strenth' ones for the other rooms. I think it should solve the problem. (I Hope the cost is no problem). Maybe only get one strong one and put it from room to room, at the hours you are not there. Apart from the smell, it will do you a lot of good too.

My impression of (a very quick look at) the hexagrams is, that nothing you can do towards her or the management company will have much effect. Hex.19 is 'accepting the other as he/she is', but 27 feels as if you do yourself a favor by not doing anything.

Beth, LiSe's right about ion-generators. Room size Hepa-filters also work very well.

I also lean toward her interpretation of your reading, only it includes doing as she suggested with purifying (27) your own immediate environment as a corrective measure rather than doing nothing. But she actually included that in her first paragraph.

LiSe and Candid -

Thank you for your feedback. I see that you are right and agree. Rocking this boat would only leave me wet and frustrated, and still with a smelly bedroom! :)

I'll have to do some reading on ion-generators and hepa-filters and see where I can fit it into the budget soon. I've already decided to transfer the clothing and bedding that I store up there into heavy rubber storage bins as a starter. I doubt there's any way to rescue my books and photos.

Thank you so much for your input. I feel better for having "let off some steam" and for getting a fresher, more objective view of the situation. :)

Peace,

Beth
