Karcher's latest

I've been working with Stephen Karcher's 'Total I Ching' since I came across it in December. There are all sorts of reasons why it's a special (in fact, amazing) version but the one I want to talk about is this: Karcher re-invents the Yi in a lot of places in ways that I don't agree with, but despite that, his reading of lines usually has as much if not more to say to me and my situation than the version I use and trust more than any other. So, what conclusion can I draw from this? LOL I'm not sure, but value and power have to be acknowledged where you find them. I'm thinking he doesn't re-invent the Yi so much as reinvigorate it. There's the pairing of the hexagrams which is sensible and useful, and there's the wonderful background stories and myths for many of the hexagrams, but it's his way of *associating* images with the lines that seems to be so fruitful. And he's done this, not by limiting himself to the literal meaning of the lines particularly(although he respects that approach), but in the spirit of the line, if that makes any sense. The result is a kind of 28.2 situation, I think.

I'd love to know if 'Total I Ching' has been translated into Mandarin, and what Chinese users make of it. After the storm died down, I mean LOL.

I should not read any book that is written down to explain, classify and wordalize Yi, try to learn cognitively to understand something that is not bound (as we believe) by the laws that be here. Or else the relation may dry up, go blunt in the context of wrong context for the interested parties.
How i should fare then ? Well, i asked if must read books about it ?
light clings to light, possession in great measure. Text clings to the text not to any other text and it possesses a lot (enough, driving away other textes).

Yeah, that's my impression too. (I think LOL.)
It's independent of convention in a whole lot of ways.

Where were you a year ago when a whole river of bytes were written about Karcher's latest book? Just do a search in the archives. There is enough material there for a thesis (plus a screenplay for a miniseries...) Lots of fun and passion in the archives about it. LOL

Hi Dobro,

I double check Karcher's approach with LiSe's website, Bradford Hatcher's, and John Lynn's Wang Bi. I don't think 'Total I Ching" has been translated into Mandarin.
