Line 1 of 17 is about changing the object of one's pursuit (Legge translation). This could mean either his work overseas ("going beyond one's own gate") or returning from it. Because it is in relation (changing to ) H45, Gathering Together , which is about a common meeting place, and preparation, I would say this indicates he may be extending his contract. However, it might also be read as saying that he could return and gather together with you and others and that you ought to be preparing for that.Hello people, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to help me figure out what my hexagrams mean? I asked about whether a past love interest is likely to stay overseas and extend his work contract further or whether he will return as originally planned. Any insights? Thank you!

This is what is difficult about such questions with the I Ching: There is a lot of ambiguity.
I suppose it might be more straightforward to ask, "What might I need to know about my focus on his returning?" If this is what you had in mind when you asked the question, then perhaps this second interpretation is the right one. Has he kept in touch? Can you simply ask him? Has there been talk of his extending his contract, or his ability to do so?
Also, if you use the fan yao method with the lines, in which the changing line of the first hexagram (17.1) leads to the same line of the second (so would be 45.1) this line tells you not to fear, "Have confidence, it does not end. One clasp of his hand and you can smile again." (Berkers). Unfortunately, my computer is all screwed up, cannot copy/paste now, so am doing this from memory. But that would be the general idea of 45.1, which is very positive for you in this case.

Why is that great news? Can you clarify what you mean by that? There is no fan yao 'method' . The fan yao is just the equivalent line in the relating hexagram. This is 45.1 but this really doesn't mean the answer of 45.1 is relevant here at all. It was never meant to be used as 'the answer' and isn't a method of reading The fan yao is a kind of mirror image of the received line....I thinkof it as what the line you got isn't
She cannot take her answer as 45.1. If her answer was 45.1 she would have cast 45.1
You are right its impossible to tell with 17.1 whether he decides to explore new territories or come back so theres a better question to be asked IMO.
Its great news you don't have access to paste Ewalds commentaries
Why is that great news? Can you clarify what you mean by that?
I certainly will have access again.
And I had been told many times that yes, fan yao line is corresponding and can be taken into account. You are saying, then, that it is the opposite or reversal of what you actually got, and thus has no bearing on it, except to be the negation of the received line?
ETA: After years of using Wilhelm, Richard Lynn, Legge, and other versions, I find Ewald Berkers - both the translation and commentary - the most apt and accurate. For example, most editions have H38.1 as being about a horse which ran away, and will return on its own. Berkers, conversely, has it , "the lost horse did not run away by itself again." Then comments: "The other person does not want to be with you. They are not wrong: Try and see how you are causing this." It is this translation/commentary which always resonates with my situation. Just one among many examples.
I can see your point, but how do you think he himself justifies his own translation, especially since he himself used Wilhelm on his eclecticenergies site for quite some time? Not being snarky, really just wondering about Berkers, and why he feels comfortable straying from established meanings.... I guess I have always found him to resonate with spirit and intuition. If he is wrong, though, I guess he is wrong. (or some of the time, in any case)LOL exactly....he's wrong IMO . Thats one good reason why i was glad you weren't pasting it ...because its misleading. Everyone quotes....but you always quote what is misleading...hence my relief at you not quoting.
However do feel free to go on quoting him, theres certainly no rule against it. I was only expressing personal relief.....others may like it. They could just look it up themselves of course....save you the bother of quoting his entire work
I understand. I actually do have thoughts of my own, but quite frankly, am so busy and tired and vexed by life problems at this juncture, cannot go indepth as to what they are. I was only posting Berkers because Legge's scholarly talk, as well as Wilhelm's - once beloved to me - had begun to irritate me, and I thought Berkers might be some fresh air for people. I do try and make reference to Legge, as well as to my own thoughts. I think after years of combining I Ching with serious philosophical academic study, I am now becoming minimalist in my thinking, and I found Berkers to be a reflection of that. :bows:People take the fan yao into account yes....but thats not the same as the fan yao being the actual answer. The fan yao may throw light on the answer...some say its how it feels subjectively...I think it throws light on the answer sometimes as being the reverse of the answer received.
You said 45.1 'is very positive for you' I think you have the wrong end of the stick. 45.1 was not the answer.
Re Ewald...well if people want to read his work they can just go straight to it can't they.
He says its 'accurate' but 'accurate is not a useful word for Yi interpretation.
Personally I think Ewalds commentaries are so simplified as to lose a good deal of meaning that why I was pleased you couldn't keep on pasting
You can do what you like of course.
If you have been using Wilhelm and Legge for years don't you have any thoughts of your own If you have been casting Yi for years how come you don't have any ideas unless you paste in Ewalds work ? You seem dependent on it. I was pleased when you ceased dependence.
I agree. He had an agenda, it would appear, in that he constantly makes references to political events relevant to his own time and place (veiled, of course, but one can see them plainly if one knows where he is coming from). I still refer to him as well.Wilhelm's translation can also be a bit off..
I still look at his book though.

Ah, ok, thanks for that. So in this case, 45.1 would be the opposite of the truth of the reading, which is contained in 17.1? Was not aware of this. Thanks .Here I asked about Fan Yao and Bradford explained as trojan states...it is just a mirror to help you get clearer on the meaning of the line you drew...the opposite. http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?t=14465
So I assume that both should indeed be taken into account, but the second one simply adding another possible perspective." I think it says to find a comprehension that sees the problems from both directions simultaneously."
Six-line prediction method (see Chinese chart at the end of this message)
You = line 3, white tiger
Him = line 6, peacock
Both are yin lines. Both of you are not sure about the future.
There is an opposing view or disagreement (you and him) concerning the situation.
Since 官鬼丁酉金 (him, line 5) sits under the month of the reading in the original hexagram, this means the odds are bad for being together as serious boy/girl friends or spouse at present.
There is a possibility of a triangle relationship (female 1 = line 6; female 2 = line 3; man = line 5). Although you want to be with him now, but you cannot.
Line 1 in change hexagram appears under the year of the reading, this means no chance in 2012.
In hexagram 45, again we see (female 1 and 2 = line 6 and 1; man = line 5), it is very easy for a thid party female to enter into this relationship.
Using Plum flower Iching theory, hexagram 45 has the following layout
line 4 to 6: Tui (metal) joyous trigram: Body trigram (體)
line 1 to 3: Kun (earth) receptive trigram: Use trigram (用)
Earth produces metal
In this case, it is the use trigram that produces the body trigram.
From theory,
用生體,行人即歸。用生體,婚易成,或因婚有得。
The above Chinese word means the male will return, but it does not predict whether he will stay. At present, the female stills fall for the male.
Wait and see what happens in September 4 - Oct 3 2012.
In the change hexagram, line 6 female (earth) produces the line 5 male (metal). One female really likes to be with him.
Hexagram 45 = Eight of pentacles in Tarot card reading.
Meaning of the card: If you are single, there is a good chance that you just may meet a new love interest in the near future. For those of you beginning a new relationship, the future is full of possibility. This relationship has the potential to create a deep connection and attachment.
If you are serious, please learn to adapt. From Tarot card meaning: The important thing to remember when it comes to love relationships is that there is always something to learn. Not only are we learning more about those we love, but we continue to learn more about ourselves whenever we participate in intimate relationships.
From Iching reading, sort out things yourself. There is no real answer to continue or drop out. If you continue, you both still have a chance. Try finding out more about you and him from a Chinese 8-letter birthday analysis. Iching only answers thing at the present moment. It is not a good tool for predicting what happens in 2013.
