Hi everyone, I’m new to the I-Ching, I got interested in it after reading The Man in High Castle. I’ve bought Hilary’s book and have been doing a few readings, but could use some help.

Today I asked the question ‘How can I move forward out of my work situation?’. The answer was 28.2 > 31.

The background is that I’m totally frustrated and bored at work. I started thinking about career change about 2 years ago, did a part-time course, have had different jobs, but don’t seem to be getting anywhere. I got my current role which seemed like the dream job but has turned out to be pretty awful, and I feel a bit trapped. I want to leave but don't know where to go. I have all this energy bursting out trying to do something, but I just can’t find the right direction to go in/the right ‘career path’ to follow and I don’t know where to start.

28 seems to describe pretty well what I’m feeling at the moment but I don’t feel like the answer has shown me how to move forward! What am I missing? Thanks so much for any help.

The only thing that immediately stands out to me is the answer seems to indicate fresh life fom something that seems worn out and old (28.2) So where you need to be looking out for is for a rejuvenation in an area you are either already in or have been in in the past. I might say you could rule out brand new areas as being the way forward.

I'm also wondering if this is merely a time of strain in your current job (28) and that actually it will become good again...although you do say its boring

I think this is a great answer with its image of blossom and flowers from an old tree

Perhaps your answer in how to move forward is to look to what and where the 'old tree ' is for that is where the flowers spring from

what takes you forward may be an old interest, previous work...or even your job may change in some way and you can recapture initial enthusasm ?

Sweet answer :)

you could even do some image work with the tree to locate what it is to you in this reading

Wow, that's a really insightful answer, thank you so much. That'sa great image with the blossom from the tree. It's true that the area of work I'm now in is something I was really interested in (the design sector) but the actual company and specific role I'm doing seem to be totally dead and withered, we've nearly run out of funding and everything's shutting down. So maybe something will come from that direction. Can't see how right now but you never know...

I'm still not sure what I should be doing, could that link into 31? I am hardly putting any effort in at work as there's not much to do and the situation seems hopeless. Am I supposed to use my influence for good, or something like that?

Maybe we torment ourselves with ideas of what we should be doing when all the time we are doing precisely what we should be doing....even if its boring

28.2 is the opposite of hopeless , maybe all you need to do is remain sensitive and open to what you feel drawn to (31)..'should' feelings could hinder that process. Perhaps it may help to orientate your mind to focising on what it was you really like about the design sector...the attractions still there, its not dead. No place for it to blossom right now but look like there will be

How can I move forward out of my work situation?
28.2>31

I suppose you feel you are about to explode like a beam under too much pressure.

Nine in the second place means:
A dry poplar sprouts at the root.
An older man takes a young wife.
Everything furthers.

A tree that is dead in the top puts out new growth at its base. The implication to me is that you should backtrack to your professional roots where your vitality comes from and build upward from there. That is, you can "find the right direction to go in" by reflecting on your earlier impulses and vitalities -- your source of inspiration. If you do so, you will find a union of personality and work (31).
