#49 - does anyone else find it scary?

I find 49 a scary hexagram. It always comes up with questions that are personally hugely important. Not that it comes up often (thank heavens!), but when it does I really sit up and take notice.

I drew it yesterday when asking

What is the effect of pursuing this (business) opportunity?

I got 49, change line 3 changing to 15.

Now, when I have drawn 49, it's always been at some sort of turning point, and this is certainly one. It's an opportunity for a piece of business that could be wonderful - but it means stepping into the completely unknown, both in terms of the nature of the business and also because it would necessitate creating an alliance with others - plus a lot of negotiation, legal agreements and all sorts of things which are outside my normal comfort zone. Not that they are bad - just that I'm having to do a lot of learning and thinking on my feet. Not suprisingly, I'm quite apprehensive about this, and it is making me really work hard on personal growth issues.

What I didn't find easy to follow was the changing line. I think it's saying don't rush into anything too quickly, but equally don't hold back too much.

Last time I drew #49 it was when I was asking whether I should withdraw from a particular situation - which took a lot of courage since I was effectively cutting off an income stream. But it proved the right decision in the long run, although at the time many people thought I was doing the wrong thing.

I'd be interested to know about anyone else's experiences with #49. Do you find it a 'big' one too?

I think line 3 just means to be sure to wait til the time is right. Watch the indicators. There is nothing wrong with getting out of your comfort zone. We all need to do that much more often. An old saying, "What you do not know, the doing will quickly teach you."

Hi Ann,

Big changes can feel very scary. But so can not having big changes at times.

I agree with Gene on line 3. I'm inclined to take Yi's 3 times literally. But as he said, be watchful for the right time to announce the change.

Yes, 49 in general heralds the right time for big changes, the 'meltdown' period before 'recasting' life into a new and better form. Definitely scary. Also, I think, maybe about getting to the point where you know the change is right and are 'sincere and confident' or 'connected to the spirits' and this is more important than the fear.

Line 3 says you can't just make this happen through determination and persistence. Trying to force trust is an excellent way to land in a deep pit. Words of revolution going the rounds three times - talking it over with whoever else is involved, certainly, and also talking to yourself. The aim is to get used to the idea, and ultimately to reach the point of trust and connection where it feels right.

This is Radical Change's Following, which indicates both that events will tend to move and lead you naturally in the right direction, and also that you have to respect their natural seasons. (See the Image of #17!)

Hello there

I don't understand this - I have posted answers a couple of times and they are not here Computers and I are not usually on the best of terms.

Thank you as ever for your answers. As usual they made perfect sense where I wasn't seeing the wood for the trees.

Dear Ann: I just a short essay on Hexagram 49 in divinational terms. I think in your case every suggested path meant you were changing your future (hopefully for the better but it can mean worse) and that is what Hexagram 49 essentially stand for. Of course, other meanings are there. If you continue receiving this hexagram ask again-is this change for the better and should I go for it? Then, have no fear!

Best,

Mary
